Looking at the FSM it is supposed to have a starter ground cable. Where does this cable run? From the starter bolt --------->???? Am I worrying about nothing? It works fine now.

you can ground the starter to just about anything, but the *best* way to do it would be to run a cable directly to the battery. When my ground cable 'rusted' out, I used a length of large cable maybe 4 or 6 ga and ran it from the starter to the frame to the battery. I figure that more ground cables aren't likely to hurt anything (unless you hook 'em up to a + source).

You *could* ground it out to the body panel if you wanted, but that wouldn't be as good as grounding it just about anywhere else.

In your photos I see the inner motor out and you say it's not impossible to reassemble. I have been trying to manuever screwdrivers in there for an hour, how do I keep the contacts open so the inner motor will go back in place? I'm in Costa Rica and I can't find a new or used replacement any where, I need to get this goin asap. Thanks

Ooops, sorry, not subscribed to this thread.... Hope it all worked out!

Friendly bump for a useful thread.

Guys,
I am having a similar issue with my starter but not sure if this will be the fix. Once in a blue moon, I turn the key and NOTHING; no click, no start. I have to give it a push start and it fires right up. Once the starter motor has been turned, it seems to work.

Having said that this seems to happen when the truck has been running for a while and it's hot outside.

Thanks for this amazing thread.

Have you tried tapping on the starter when it doesn't start? You don't have to hit it hard, just a tap with a length of wood or metal. If it starts after you tap it, then rebuilding the starter contacts will probably fix it. Worked for me.

Thanks A Bunch

Had this same issues and ordered my parts through CDan the whole process took 1hr30min at most and that is because I didn't read all the way to the bottom of the post on taking the nut off the stud for the lower end. So I fought trying to hold it up and line up the stud. After I stopped and read to the end only took a minute. When I received my contact kits I didn't get the paper looking part but I did get a couple of o-rings. I figured out they went on the studs on the outside before the round plastic part went in.

Thanks a lot for the nice write up that saved me a lot of time a bunch of money.

Did the above repair---Pretty sure everything got put back together exactly as it came out, all connections are back on BUT Im still getting the click and no turnover. I can tap on the starter and it starts right up. Now what!??? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Take the starter back out, remove the end cap, and loosen both nuts that tighten down on the contacts. You want the contacts to be a bit loose. With the plunger push down as hard as possible and one at at time retighten the nuts for the contacts. Before you reassemble push down on the plunger and rotate it against the contacts and check the pattern. If you're not getting a full contact pattern across both contacts loosen whichever one and repeat the process.

Im a newbie with mechanics, what do you mean by full contact pattern? The plunger doesnt make physical contact with the contacts does it?

Help with spares

exalent pic's and helpful....but where can I get these parts??
I done a web search and a 100 phone calls but no luck at all can anyone help me?:o

I ordered the above Toyota parts and then just realized something.
While going through the previous owner's receipts I found that the starter was replaced by some independent shop.
The cost was around 150 which leads me to believe they put in some generic or cheap remanufactured unit.
So Im assuming the Toyota parts I ordered will be useless for this starter.
If so I will be posting the new parts for sale here. Unless the dealer takes them back.

Why would the parts be useless? If the shop replaced it with a rebuilt unit, it was still a rebuilt ND I assume. So rebuild it again, using the Toyota parts.

My thinking is that the units aren't Toyota units but some generic Chinese made starters.
I misspoke when I said reman because that implies they are remanufactured Toyota units.

Interesting..... I didn't know there were aftermarket new starters available. To my knowledge, there were only rebuilt starters available, even from places like Autozone. When you buy a starter, you generally must pay a core charge or return the old starter.
