I know how much you guys love the color so I figured I’d share what I was planning on doing with it.

Since the color is originally a VW Mango Green I wanted to mock-up how it would look matched with one of the complimentary colors they would use on the two-tone microbuses: Seagull Grey.

I actually like the way it looks!
(It’s ok you can hate it)

On another note… pretty sure I need a new throwout bearing, so I guess some preventative maintenance is in order when I go to swap that out.

Exciting times ahead…

John
Yeah man, paint it whatever colors speak to you!

ehh so a bit of an update, nothing exciting yet, still waiting on moving her up the shop to begin the real work of rust repair, but for now I’ve been hunting some grounding issues and fixing up trim here and there.

Turns out this 3-speed boot for the FJ40 works great for me. I stripped and rattle canned the metal ring and it looks great.

Anyone want a free 4-speed boot? It may or may not have been cut and glued back together, but you can’t even tell… and free is free !!:grinpimp:, just DM me if you want it.

Ah, had I kept reading, my comments about 3 spd would not have been needed!
I just noticed your knob (wait, what?) - you are rocking the 3 spd. Now I am wondering what your build date is.
That's the problem with getting behind in here...

I will take the boot, if still available!

Good news of sorts:

After a very long 60 mile trip, complete with 6 pitstops on the side of the road to clear out the fuel filter. I finally got the truck up to garage where I'll be working on it. She ran strong whenever the fuel delivery wasn't an issue, but definitely made re-shift my priorities; going to be focusing on fixing this fuel delivery issue before anything else. I talk about it a little more in that other thread

A huge bubble keeps forming in the fuel filter which is what I suspect is causing the fuel delivery issue.
Have a new OEM filter on order, but will be flushing out the fuel lines and tank to make sure there isn't anything clogging it, I suspect there will be plenty of crud in the tank and lines...

Are you using the mechanical pump, mounted on the engine?
If so, you are pulling from the tank and building a modest pressure suitable for a carburetor, and (hopefully) running a return line to route excess fuel that is not needed when the float closes back to the tank.
That bubble will stay.
If you were running a high pressure, in-tank pump, you would want a jacketed filter that is vertically oriented - air gap rises and is pressed out by fuel...

Not seeing a lot of crud in that filter!

I'll have to get you the exact date and picture of the engine plate with all the info.

Rust and paint are definitely the chief concern, but sorting out this fuel issue first. I'm getting close though, just last weekend I ended up popping on a new universal style filter on with new clamps to rule out any air leakage / restriction issues and it's running much better. I plan on flushing out the fuel lines this weekend and checking out the gas tank to see the condition its in. From there just ensure everything is cleaned out in the fuel system and then install the new OEM fuel filter that came in.

Fun fact: blowing through the OEM filter is super unrestricted compared to the two universal ones, especially that glass one I was having issues with.

I've been thinking about updating this thread every single day since I last updated it in May, yikes.
It's actually becoming quite the burden thinking about updating it; feeling like I am letting myself down.
I really wanted to chronicle absolutely as much as I could about my builds progress!

Truth be told a lot has happened since I last posted...

I still haven't painted it, still haven't fixed the blistering or rust. But I have made a lot of headway in other areas... particularly with the fuel delivery issues. I've reconditioned the fuel tank, built new fuel lines, fixed odometer, fixed electrical gremlins, all sorts of crap!

I was wondering what ya'll think would be the best way to add to my journey here, should I just dump everything I've done into a single post or should I update it here and there when I find the time? What do you guys find most annoying so I can avoid doing that lol. To be honest its crazy how much life can get in the way of a simple thing like this, maybe I am just not cut out for it...

Needless to say I am still grateful I found this community, and come visit pretty often to catch up on the latest and greatest.

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season so far, and wishing the best to everyone in this coming new year!
I still hope one day I can meet some of you at a Pig Party, hopefully I'll be ready for the next one :).

Take care folks

There is no one way to do the updates - it’s your Pig, your thread.

Some people don’t post anything, and some people (ahem: Scrappy) will post that they just sat in their Pig today and made vroom noises.

I like to make a post for each little topic, but that’s just me. Sometimes it makes it easier for me to find stuff in the future.

A little less talk and a little more action, in my best Elvis voice. :) Really, pictures tell a lot, so you don't have to type so much. It's up to you and how you want to lay it out. In my case, if it didn't get in print fast, I would forget how it went together.
Good points, pictures tell a great story, and writing before you forget things.

Speaking of forgetting, sometimes I will search something, start reading a post and wonder what idiot wrote that, and then realize it’s one of my posts!

I’ve had to delete multiple posts of my own at the beginning of my build thread because they were so dumb.

Hey @effjay55 , do you have a smart

thats part of the problem right now for me, I have to look through loads of pictures and videos to see what I can put together. I guess I better get to work!

Hey @effjay55 , do you have a smart phone?
Yeaaahhh? Ok ok I get where this is going . I have no excuse, I know. I just got to comb through it all and I guess dump it in about as chronological order as I can manage. :hillbilly:

Ive actually ditched all social media as of late so my phone has sort of turned into a glorified flashlight and occasional camera.

Ok so I can at least talk about the new door panels in the meantime while I get a photo dump together . Maybe some of you already know about it. Maybe some of you don’t!

I found a post from awhile back talking about @a1500ram (SMS Headliners) making reproduction door panels. I wasn’t sure if he was still making them so I messaged him in September and he told me he was.

I decided to purchase the full set for $625:

2x kick panels
2x front doors
2x b pillars
2x rear doors
2x cargo panels

Around 4 weeks after sending payment I received these beauties:

IMG_6357.webp

To say I was impressed with the quality would be an understatement. I was actually super thrilled to see how good they turned out and amazed with Steve’s (@a1500ram) handy work. So if anyone is looking to get some new door panels, I highly recommend you reach out to Steve, either on here or through Facebook.

He includes all the necessary hardware to mount it as well as offering different variations of the cargo panels and in my opinion, the price is a great deal.

Now I’m in the process of getting all of these installed, and I also decided to try and install the window runs to finally get rid of all the rattling. that sort of turning out to be a pain in the ass.:bang:
