Help! Suspension lift kit!!!!

Hi guys,

Im pretty much new to this site, and to off-roading. First of all i have a 92 Toyota pick up truck, 4x4, 5 speed. 3.0, extended cab. Well im planning to install a suspension lift kit (at least 4 or to 5 inches) on my truck. What brand is the most affordable, and dependable that i can buy on the market today? :hhmm: I am planning to use my truck for a little bit of mud, and little bit of off-roading. im not looking for HARDCORE off roading! aha.

You are looking for troubles with 4-5" of lift

Your front IFS and alignment will not tolerate that kind of lift without significant mods that are probably way beyond what you are looking to spend. Stick to less than 3" to avoid premature CV joint failure and excessive vibration at highway speeds.

There are some good kits available, not sure what's available for your model year but look at Old Man Emu (OME) and Sonoran Steel if you want to improve handling and offroad capability. Be wary of kits using spacers. These are mostly used for looks and will not improve your ride and could potentially damage your truck if you get too rambunctious offroad. Sonoran Steel has an informative, if somewhat self-serving write-up in their website.

If you want to go that high, I assume you are looking to fill the empty space with large meaty tires. Do that, and your 3.0 liter engine will disappoint you unless you also change your gearing.

Bottom Line: Do your homework based on an honest assessment of how you plan to use the truck. 4-5" of suspension lift on top of a 3" body lift is pretty extreme for such a narrow, light weight vehicle. Think about that in a strong cross wind on teh freeway or off camber trail.

You don't need to do any of that to go play in the mud, or rocks a bit. You can fit 33's without any lift, and in my opinion it looks better low with bigger tires than tall with lots of space above the tires.... Go do some reading in the FAQ thread.

you should already be able to fit 33's with that body lift you have - unless you really want to hit the hard stuff or look like a refugee from the 80's you won't need much more than that. If you really want to go that high, look into a solid axle swap - but there you're looking at thousands of dollars and some compromises with ride quality

So your saying that you have a 3" body lift, and it is still rubbing on 33's? You independent front suspension is pushed pretty hard with 33's, and to go up in size will ultimately mean dissapointment and more money. I can do trails that you wouldnt think possible on 31's. Traction is an important factor. If your dead set on a lift, google what you need. I see a tuff country for around 800.00.

The problem is "affordable and dependable". Those two words shouldnt be used when discussing lifting an independent front suspension.

As someone already mentioned, longer shackles and cranked up torsion bars could achieve the same thing.
 
i had a 92 toyota pickup. It had a 4 inch suspension lift, bigger torsion bars and longer shackles. it measured about 7 inces taller, it had 35x15.5x15 Super swamper SX. it measured about 7 inches taller than factory and i never had any problems with anything.
 
I'll toss this out there, just for your consideration. I helped my son install a set of Roger Brown's ball joint spacers on his '87 4Runner last night. It was remarkably easy to do, as long as you have the right tools. You do have to do some cutting on your upper control arms, we used a cutoff tool and cleaned it up with a stone in a die grinder.

It gave him about 2-1/2" of lift in the front, but I'll tell ya... the alignment was whacked when we took it down off the stands, we measured ~2.5" of toe-in. He had it aligned today and it drives great now.
