info for tokico brand shocks (they do oem for some manufacturers, not sure about toyota)
58~75/01 FJ40,BJ40
oil gas oem numbers
front 3178 E3178 48511-69035 48511-69036
rear 3068 E3344 48531-69045

shock for our cruisers would've been hydraulic (oil) as gas shocks didn't come about until the late 60s early 70s

i also found some information showing that mitsubishi used the same stuff, so maybe that will help

As it ends up the fronts from Toyota did fit the rear. Found all 4 from Toyota, 2 in Los Angeles, 1 in Seattle and 1 in Kansas City. :)

Are you sure the fronts aren't too short? I though they were a couple inches shorter than the rear. Or is it the other way around?

Fronts should be fine since those are the ones he was able to get. If the back require a longer shock then it will hit the bump stop before the shock bottoms out. It will limit how far the spring can move the other way. But because this cruiser days of offroading are done I doubt that will be a issue. If the shock has a couple of inches of movement either direct it will probably be fine for the limit use this cruiser will see.

LITP,,,,,,Thanks for the info as always. We messed around with different shocks, front and back and at this point can't see any difference between the integrity of the Toyota Rears and other brands. If I decide to run the cruiser up and down some harsh off roading area's I will report back and let you guys know how it played out. But,,,,,,,as of now I just run it down the road to pick up milk and bread ( about once per week ) lol.

Are there any benefits in going for gas shocks? or shall I continue to hunt for "Oil Version"?

I would get oil original shocks for your build. If you are going to modify, check out Fox racing shocks. John

I am trying my best to take "Sheriff" back to as much as stock possible. I am finding it very hard to source OEM shocks. Toyota USA won't ship shock absorbers any more and tokico oil versions are NLA. Gas versions are available in OEM specs.
