Still having trouble getting my fj40 to engage in 4wd.
I've added an illustration this time. I never shifted it into 4wd before with the cover off to see where it goes. I am assuming when you shift into 4wd and 4lo, the shift lever should come back and move around that bracket? I've soaked the linkage with PB blaster as someone indicated that the linkage might be rusted up a bit, but I still can't get the lever to move backward after soaking the link joints several times. Any ideas? or am I totally on the wrong track?

the lever moves a slide collar in the front nose cone of the transfer. that engages both front and rear drive. when you move the lever over to 4lo it is connected to the top of the transfer and shifts to a different set of gears.

Take the 2w/4w shift fork off the nose cone and see if its rod will move. The rod often gest stuck because the aluminum housing gets corroded. With it off, you can also see whether the lever is stuck or whether the shift collar on the Tcase output shaft can slide to engage the front output shaft. That way you can check everything that moves.

Just took this pic for another thread. UPS damaged the one that is now broken but you can see what the part looks like. There is probably a rubber boot still on yours judging by the look of your Cruiser.

exactly, had the same problem on my first FJ. If your careful you can put a pair of pliers on the aluminum rod & rotate it (slightly) to break the corrosion while its still on the rig. But taking it of is easy & better.

From that picture, you see the bolt head that push on a lock ball via spring.
I unscrewed the bolt, removing the spring and ball. Put loose-nut onto the shaft and :bounce:
Note: I didn't have to remove the piece from the tcase/tranny.
