hey guys so i gota a 91 pickup with the 3.0 v6. so i this just started happenening out of the blue, i start the truck and it runs horribly, it cant even idle without me gassing it, basically it runs like really bad, i have been able to drive it but it hardly behaves. It bogs and chokes and wants to die and wont go hardly 100kph. Sometimes it will start then just die and it wont start again for like 20 mins, it will start but die instantly. i dunno im thinking maybe its some sorta sensor or something? BTW i have recently got new plugs and wires and a new fuel filter. Plz help me i gotta get to work tomorow and i dont think she'll make it. thx for ne input.

Can you verify the condition of the new plugs? If the electrode is inadvertently bashed during assembly the gap could be way off. Also the TPS may need calibration (search the FAQ for this, no time for me to link). Vacuum leaks can also plauge this motor, we've got hoses everywhere in there. I'd check the plugs first, good luck.

Have you pulled trouble codes? I would start there. Many things will cause what you describe. Also, make sure you didn't bump a vacuum hose off, and the intake clamps are tight.

ok i turned the key on and went to listen for the fuel pump, but im not hearing ne thing which would lead me to believe that the pumps not working but if it wasnt working then the truck wouldnt run right? also ive found that when i remove the oil cap the truck will die unless i feed it some throttle to keep it going. ive also noticed that when the truck is running it smells like its running really rich, and there is a little bit of moisture kinda like black water but it was sprayed onto my mud flap so maybe its a bit of dirt mixed with water i dunno. thx again. And man i feel like an idiot but for the life of me i just cant understand reading the trouble codes, when i do it the light just keeps blinking really fast with no pauses. I had the truck in neutral, proper operating temp, jumped te1 and e1, and i had full battery voltage.

Nope, the Toyota/AISIN EFI system doesn't work this way. The only time the fuel pump is running is when either a) you are cranking the engine. or b) there is air flowing thru the airbox and the key is ON. Just turning the key to ON will not turn on the fuel pump. There is a way you can force it on, put a jumper across the +B and Fp terminals on the Diagnostic connector, then turn the key ON, the fuel pump should run. You should hear fuel hiss thru the fuel rail on top of the engine.

This is normal, with all EFI engines.

It may be running rich, it may also be a clogged cat.

This sounds like an "all systems normal" code to me.

You can short the fp and B+ terminals at the diagnostic box to fire the pump without the engine running, but key in "on" position. You should be able to hear the pump at the tank.

The engine is supposed to stumble and run rough when you pull the cap. It causes a "vacuum leak" since the crankcase is an enclosed system (loose, worn dipsticks can do the same thing). In the normal condition metered air is pulled into the rocker arm cover, and then runs through the PCV into the manifold. By pulling the cap you introduce unmetered air into the system.

Quick flashes without pauses says there are no trouble codes.

The rich condition suggests failed Ox sensor.

ok first thx for the input without ridicule and 2nd i got no cat so no backup there but maybe ur right pappy about the o2 sensor i will get one 2morow and i will go check the fuel pump rite now thx again guys! ps do u guys think maybe it could be a tps prob?

It wouldn't hurt to check the TPS. Do you have a Factory Service Manual with the proceedure? You'll need a decent DVM and a set of feeler gauges.

also isnt it quite strange that there is no trouble codes yet it runs so poorly?

no im totally POed that i cant find it, cuz i could check alot of things otherwise but without it i dont have many options

OMG! i took it for a test drive and its worse than b4, atleast b4 i could limp it around, but now its retarded. it feels and smells fuel related, if im in neutral it tries to die so i try to rev it but if i rev it ne where past like 1/2 throttle or maybe less, it like cuts the fuel or it atleast bogs really hard and almost dies. I can slowly get it up to higher rpms but even when i have it at 4000rpm and SLOWLY let out the clutch the rpms drop extremely fast. I had to put it in low gear to make it home and even then it was hardly possible, same thing she neede 4000 to start and still it was very difficult, o man this is not cool for a DD. I dont have experience with o2 sensors but doesnt this sound a little extreme to be an o2 sensor?

I'm not as familiar with the 3.0 as other engines. You should have some rubber connectors on the intake tube. Are they cracked? Test by spraying starting fluid around them and see if the idle changes.

X2, carefully check the intake tubes, boots, etc, if cracked, leaking will cause that type of running problem.

Maybe a little extreme, but I had a truck do something similar and even though it didn't trigger the CEL, replacement solved the problem.

How's the oil level? When a friend's pickup with the same engine gets over 1.5 quarts low it bogs some. At 2 quarts low it likes to die. Add oil and it's happy again. PS: this is a very high mileage V.slow and the compression isn't the best.

it turns out it was a bad tps and egr and one of my intake pipes was a liittle off, thx guys for the input
