Can anyone tell me what these holes were for?

No one I’ve met can tell me what they were for. I’ve been inclined to think they are factory, with the holes going through inside and outside layer. The small one looks like an indexing hole for the light or whatever was up there.
These are on both sides of the top.

I either want to use them as intended, plug them, or find something creative to do with them.

Thanks all for the replies. Not OEM it seems, so that answers the main thing. They looked so clean and consistent, on both sides of the top which threw me.
Not the worst spot for a light for camping or working I guess, but I really like the dark so I’ll plug them for now.

I put on a waterproof aux back up light right above the OEM unit, 40W LED that will do white or amber solid or flashing. Very nice for setting up camp in the dark. Plus I back into my house about 300 yards.

Do like Charlie did but use it to blind the tailgaters.

My guess would be antenna mounts.

Being on both sides doubt it's antenna. Most old school antennas are one big hole with three smaller mounting holes spaced evenly around the main hole. Going for high mounted tail lights.
I've seen folks with double antenna before. I don't know what or why. Who knows, could be fishing pole racks for all we know.

Now you’re got me thinking, but the 50 cal M2 is already scheduled to be mounted to the roll cage through the roof.

Now, back to SAS.
Hey look, Telluride!

Back in the day (almost 30 years ago) I designed an electric turret for the Belgian Browning civilian BAR I had. Made a 40 round magazine by welding two 20 round real BAR magazines together. Windshield wiper motors are awesome for such tasks, stepper motors would be the go to these days.

Could even be for speakers to use while camping. Hard to guess what POs have done. I have a pair of 1/75+12/75 mustard color hard top sides. Someone drilled holes on the inside and put aluminum plugs in them. They do not go thru to the outside. My 73 FST came with a red 72 hard top. It has yellow plastic plugs on the inside. That one was fairly easy to figure. Back hatch has an old school metal dealer's emblem. It's from Missouri. Plastic plugs have Z Bar on them which I would assume is some type of Rust proofing.

When you mentioned yellow plugs with Zs, i knew exactly what they were from. Ziebart was popular in the rustbelt back in the day. Im not sure if it helped or hurt rust prevention. All the cars evetually rusted away. I think it might have cloughed the drains.

I do not know the complete history of my 73 FST. Just know it was sold in AZ and always registered in AZ. Last registration expired in 1988. When the hard top made it to AZ I do not know. The gutter on the cap was rusted. Back header had a little rust. Sides biggest issue is the darn holes and probably what's underneath the yellow caps.

They drilled holes then ran a rod in them to spray undercoating in the cavity.

I like speakers, that is fun.
What about hooks for tanning hides?
