Need some input on the condition of these gears

I'm looking at purchasing this open 3rd member with 4.88's, what do you guys think of the condition of the gears?

Is there a way you can identify the gear ratio on a 3rd member? i.e. counting teeth on the ring or something? I'm looking at picking up a used 4.88 3rd member and want to make sure they are really 4.88's. The 3rd member is not installed on his truck.

Number of teeth on the ring divided by the number of teeth on the pinion.

Is it a factory 4.88 or was it regeared? The factory 4.88 3rds are a bit different and IIRC cannot be regeared to a different ratio.

The gears look fine to me. Maybe too clean but otherwise fine. :D

That's a 4-cyl diff, so it can't be factory. Ya, they look fine to me from here, but I would run some marking grease on them, check the pattern. If you have access to a dial gauge, you could also check the backlash.

Make sure you get all the RTV goop off the flange surface, scrape most of it with a razor scraper, then a 3M Scotchbrite biscuit in a die grinder will make it really nice.

Thanks for the input guys but I'm going to hold off on them for now..I don't know enough about gears and don't want to find out on the trail that they weren't setup correctly. :hillbilly:

I found a reputable place that sells the complete 3rd members with brand new gears and bearings for $350, so that will be my next present to the rig :bounce:
