Something to consider about the benefit of headers. Mfrs obviously have the resources to know how to shape an exhaust manifold for optimal flow. What generally prevents them from having a properly shaped manifold are other components and space because most engines today are jammed in there sideways and its a night mare.

Now look under your hood at the FZJ exhaust manifold area on a US truck. Not just plenty of room, but the exhaust manifolds are just sitting there with acres of space around them. Many engines are also used in a variety of vehicles - even the same engine in a maker's pickup that goes in their large sedan, etc. So, Toyota was free to design them optimally for their intended engine purpose, and also for this single and spacious engine bay.

The point I'm making is that these exhaust manifolds were not subject to the same space and multi-application limitations that normally plague ex. man design. So, these are likely far closer to optimal than almost any engine on the market. Not optimal, mind you. Just that there will likely be smaller gains due to this.

Having said that and having held 6 of them in my hands, they would definitely benefit from having their insides cleaned up and smooth as they're just cast. They're also not difficult to get off. I could probably get them off a 95-97 in about an hour and a half if they were presoaked in PB Blaster.

Cats are not usually restrictive unless they've failed mechanically inside. Met a guy who taught me a neat trick to verify this. Drill a hole before the cat and after the cat that's the right size for a piece of thin pipe you can stuff into the hose of your vacuum guage. Choose a small pipe as you're going to plug the hole with a short metal screw simply tightened down.

Anyhow, you rev the engine to 3k or something and get a reading both before and after the cat to compare. He said most cats create negligible resistance, and this is the way he's checked suspected plugged cats and tells me he's done this hundreds of times due to owner insistence on checking, but only found a few over the years.

It sure would have been nice to have a maybe button. There are far too many variables and too much R&D that would be involved to make it practical. If there were unbiased dyno pulls of before and after, and it were as significant a percentage as say a V8 I would do it. If however the numbers weren't there I would say no. I did vote "no" only because there was no maybe and I just don't see the ROI for whoever fabricates them.

Now, something to consider is maybe a power package. Something along the lines of the header you speak of, cam(s), throttle bottle (bore), cleaned up head. I know it's all the same stuff we have always talked about, separately. As a package deal I think there are numbers to be had. Hell, score another head, TB and exh manifolds have the heads and manifolds cleaned up and ported, bore out the TB bore and work with a cam grinder to get decent int./exh. cams and offer an exchange program. Send out the package with a core charge.

Well, that was long winded. I think I'm done for now.

Just noticed that Downey is now offering a header for your engines:

Not back by popular demand, but back because we’ll sell more of these particular Headers to Columbia & Venezuela per month than we’ll sell in the USA per year. These are a rebirth of our original 93-97 IFZFE engine Header, now offered as Headers only, no down pipes to catalytic converter. These Headers are constructed with 1 5/8” OD by 14 gauge tubing, 3/8” thick laser cut flanges, EGR retrofitted (with block-off plates), Downey 30% thicker flange gaskets, and a very serious layer of nickel and chrome plating.

17410-F93 93-97 IFZFE Headers $375.00

We invented 1FZFE engine Headers back when non-enthusiast bought new $50-60,000 FJ80’s, and they had no interest in aftermarket accessories. Today older FJ80”s are being purchased for $6-10,000 and turned into Baja war wagons. There is so much demand for FJ80 Headers now, we absolutely had to bring them back. Not enough call, however, to get them exempted ( $ ) from emissions (although they are fully emission retro fitted). These Headers are sold as Headers & Gaskets only, no down pipes from Header to catalytic converter. Your hometown muffler shop will have to make the converter connection for you.

I am putting on a new EMS exhaust and would be interested to know what kind of performance increase I could expect with the addition of headers? Is it worth the money? I have been told that the stock header is quite capable and not much to be gained by aftermarket upgrades.

Downey went out of business, so not sure if there are any headers available...

I like these types of threads so don't think I am shooting you down here but the last vehicle of mine that I put headers on was a 69 chevy....in 1973.....long time ago. I don't think I'll be street racing my TLC any time soon. I can think of a long list of things I'd rather do to an off-roading vehicle.

It's always comforting when they don't post any sort of photo of what they're actually selling you.

There are gains to be had with properly made tuned headers that allow better scavenging. But a set of properly made headers such as this would cost around $1000-1500 per unit for a production run. By properly made I mean 1/2" thick stainless steel head flanges, 1/2" thick collector flanges, 304SS thick walled runners, equal length tuned runners for maximum scavenging, etc...

If there's a market for it we can build you guys some of the nicest headers you've ever seen. But so far I haven't seen any serious interest in properly made headers for these trucks.

Glad to hear that you can do headers for the 80s. This is part of my future plan together with your ss exhaust system.
