So I posted this in the 80 section with no help and figured there may be guys on this section that could chime in...

So I have been getting conflicting reports whether or not a 100 series H151F box will fit into an 80. I heard that it may not work but then I read a thread about a guy who used a 100 series box in his 80 and just had to move the cross member like you would have to do anyways. So I'd like to see a conclusion once and for all.

I am trying to convert my 91 HDJ81 with the mechanical A442F to a 5 speed and with my research I have made the following conclusions:

-80 series H151Fs are hard to find, and very expensive new
-2nd gear can get screwy on early 80 series H151s
-100 series gearboxes are plentiful, significantly cheaper, and will have an upgraded design (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Are there people here that would know the differences between the gear boxes?

I have found 100 series transmissions (box and bell) brand new for about $3200 SHIPPED to my front door from a site in the middle east which is about $500 cheaper than the ONE 80 series box they have in stock...

Thanks for any help you guys can give me...

first two years of h151's have issues, after that most of the internals look the same. The first year may have only one drain plug (parts list shows one) and may be the only external feature.

If the countershaft in transmission is a correct mate, the hdj input will fit the h151 transmission.

Theoretically you can take a new vdj79 transmission, replace the input and bellhousing and run in a hdj. Look at 2001+ hdj79 production trucks for crossover info.

I heard of this problem with 100 series gearboxes into 7* or vice versa. Can you swap shift mechanisms?

I looked into it, and it appears that you can buy the shift plate from an 80 H151 and bolt it onto the 100 series. There are other differences in the case, like the T-case shifter mount and the rear housing. I almost did this into an 80 with a 1HD-FTE, but I tripped on a late model H151 instead with low miles and used that.

We got from 98 to 2001 manual HDJ100 with 1HD-T engine and H151 tranny .. never compare that with one from 80 series side by side but from underneath and shift pattern / manners looks exactly the same to me ..

With that being said, is it worth it to go the extra $500 for peace of mind? I was under the impression that the T case from the 80 would be a direct bolt up to the H151 from the 100...

This was my observation as well.

Maybe when I'm back in the middle east this Christmas I'll take a look at my folks 5 speed 80 and our neighbor's 5 speed 100 and compare...

The 80 T-case will be a direct bolt on, it's almost the same as a 100 case but with viscous coupler. I think it's doable, but didn't want to get into it since I had an easier option.

Makes sense.

From what I hear, if I'm spending money in the first place, might as well go the extra mile (cash wise) and get 80 SPECIFIC stuff.

With all this being said, looking at 80 series trans assembly numbers, what does this mean:

W(PTO DRIVE GEAR OR 9.00-15-6 OR 235/95R15 OR 245/85R16 TIRE) HDJ80..5F

PTO Drive gear??

This is for part # 33030-6A261

Anyone with Microcat or equivalent that can chime in whether this includes a bell housing?

On the website I'm using, 33030-6A260 gets reverted to 33030-6A261. It is a middle east based site (GCC spec).

What is PTO?

Damn, I was hoping it included more than just the box.....

PTO means power take off, for a winch or accessory. You will need bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, clutch arm, master, slave, throwout bearing carrier, etc. Figure another 2-3k with shipping for all that stuff. Best bet is to find used

You will also need all the pedal related stuff, which are 30+ different small parts, including springs and brackets and pedal.

Getting the rest of the stuff is not a problem in my scope, it can be acquired some several different directions. I'm well aware of all the different bits and pieces. My biggest challenge is getting the box.

I wanted to go the new route as:

-OZ wreckers are expensive.
-Middle East wreckers are sketchy, and those 80s will have upwards of 600,000km on them.
-Peace of mind.
-My A442F only has 140,000 KM on it so I wanted to take my time collecting parts and cash for the project (I plan to spend at least a year collecting parts, mostly new)

You will also need all the pedal related stuff, which are 30+ different small parts, including springs and brackets and pedal.

That is some great information! Thanks!

Does anyone have parts lists (similar to above) for the full RHD conversion? I thought there was mention to some comprehensive parts # collections somewhere on the site but no downloads.

h151's (and 150's) all have the same shift tower. Shift tower is ALWAYS forward of the steel intermediate plate in transmission. Shift levers change but the tower does not.

R150's have different towers and the 100 series moves the shifter forward for a bench seat- but remember the shift is 21" behind the front face of the bellhousing vs a h151 which is closer to 14".

Wow cool pictures...

I have ruled out R151s for sure.

So knowing that the tower stays the same, getting a 100 series H151 box, bolting it to a new 80 bellhousing and 80 series transfer case (the old one off the A442F) and buying an 80 series shift lever (which makes sure the shifter location is in the right OEM spot), then it should work? Obviously, plus all the other stuff....
