Sadly, box contents are not OEM hardware.

G turbo red wheel arrived intact.

Opinion question: what is everybody’s preferred exhaust manifold coating? Is it worth the time and effort to ceramic coat?

I knew it! very very nice
what is the red wheel spec/ use
and is there a reason they dont use the 6+6 type design?

I did not coat my exhaust manifold after building it but ceramic would have been nice
Ive read there are spray coatings that hold up well but cant remember which

I just got a box from Japan 4x4 that is easily bigger than a corgi.

The 79 series FTE pedal is amazing. Forget the 100 series pedal! It comes wired with a hand throttle cable. Just add knob.

Are you rebuilding the pump and injectors or swaping to new?

You are ahead of me on the swap. I'm doing the same drivetrain for an 80 and a 40. We will have the same drivetrains when all is said and done. the 80 might get a 3:73 swap along with the H152. better highway mileage.

Love it!

Last weekend @AlbertoSD came down and we wrenched for a few days. We converted three transmissions from VDJ input shaft to HDJ.

Here are a couple of tips and a little trivia.

Toyota ships the transmissions with some oil in the case. Be sure to drain it before you start, or it makes a really big mess on your workspace.

When driving the roll pin (90254-05016) out of the shift tower housing , punch it halfway out, and then use a flexible magnet to catch it before it falls into the depths of hell. It isn’t a big deal, because you’re splitting the case anyway, but it’s nice to not lose things.

Correspondingly, the oil pump at the rear of the transmission has two tiny pins (90250-04056) for the drive rotor, 180° apart. Turn the output shaft so the pins are at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock, and use a magnet to remove them. Use the same magnet to put them back in when reassembling, it’s way easier than using your fingers or forceps. Put a clean towel down on your bench when fiddling with these tiny little things so they don’t fall and ping into the void forever.

Interestingly, the H151 shift tower was held on by FIPG. In current H15x there is a metal gasket with a baffle, which requires no sealant.

There are only two bellhousing bolts that require Loctite, they are the top two at 10 at 11 o’clock.

There is one short bellhousing bolt (91612-61035), which goes underneath the throwout arm. All the rest are the same length (91612-61045).

Could I have recycled the input shaft bearing? Yes, we probably could’ve got it off without damaging the bearing. But it just didn’t seem like it was worth the risk to me.

It also would’ve been possible to shorten the input shaft bearing retainer, but paying someone to do it would’ve cost more than just buying the appropriate one new.

We also split the FTE away from the a750f transmission and T case, got it up on the stand, and started cleaning it up.

Contrary to popular belief, I am capable of cleaning up the shop every once in a while.

Someone slapped a timing belt sticker right on the FTE sticker. Who does that?

Peel slowly and see.

Look at the stupid swirl flaps on this intake shutter. I will probably cut them out, then drill, tap, and plug the holes and keep it as a spacer. If not, I would need to switch manifolds or injector lines, I believe.

Need to make those retainers into a hat/ jacket hanger!

@Blomdala YES.

I accidentally just posted this in the single cab thread, but it applies to both trucks, so I put it here too. We also built up some HF1A shifters from parts, like adult Legos.

More shifter and transmission trivia:

The HF1A shifter housings changed in size and shape slightly, I think around 2007 or 2009. The modern version has gussets for a reinforcing steel ring pin, and the H152 transmission case has a similar gusset machined into the bottom two holes. You can see these ring pins (90253-13017) on the top three shifters.

My H151 transmission does not have the case machined, so I kept the reinforcing steel rings, but ground them flat. The bottom shifter will go onto that transmission.

There is a shift position sensor on the top of the h152 case. I won’t be using it so I capped it off with an m16x1.25 stainless plug from Amazon.

@davegonz helped me get the FTE manifold sections separated this afternoon. I’ll be using a G turbo with a CT26 flange, so I picked up a new 1HDFT front manifold (17141-17031) and will reuse the FTE short segment (17142-17020). This truck will be crossover delete, so no EGR worries. I’ll take these for ceramic coat this week.
