Trees? We don't need no stinking trees!
I spent 8 of the 10 nights in my hammock in Baja, it was kick a$$!

On the 80 I had them built into the custom bumpers.
On my 60 I took a small piece of 1.75" DOM and sliced it into my bumpers at roughly a 45* angle then made some poles out of 1.5" DOM that slide in perfectly, works like a charm. I store the poles on the roof rack with some Quick Fist Clamps, Takes about 3 minutes to set up. I also put a 3" foam pad in the bottom of he Hammock on those cooler nights.

Where is my welder?!?!?!?? Son of a....where is a GAWD DAMN WELDER!??!?!?!!?

I have hammocked from the factory rack before, but eouldnt recommend it. Stout roof racks on the other hand are prime for hammocking.

3 on one side is the most I've ever done.

Looks like I will be building a roof rack this summer.

Another project for that new welder!
I just got my first real hammock for Christmas and haven't used it yet. But this thread it definitely making me want to try it out.

I'll get some pictures once the hammocks are setup on the beach. I'll be testing different anchor points here at the house.

My 1994 factory Sales brochure lists the weight load rating for the roof rack at 150LBS. The rack is installed in thin sheet with just rivnuts, i wouldn't even trust it to carry the load stated in the sales brochure, let alone me in a hammock.

Thanks Rifleman. I've already started looking at Wildyoats J-Rack ideas. The rack itself isn't that expensive but the gutter mounts are anywhere from $120 to $175. I'm trying to get pricing from Diamondrax now for their Bulldog style gutter mounts.

I like the Gamiviti low profiles too. I'm trying to figure how I can swing one of his expo racks with mounts when I'm over in New Mexico next month. Still looking at the math to see if I will actually save anything on shipping. I think he is in Denver and that is a bit of a drive.

Nope, I lose about 40 bucks if I do a round trip from Albuquerque to Denver. 890 miles at 12 mpg with average gas cost of $2.60 gal. Shipping only $150. Estimated fuel burn of $190.

I love this idea, need to find someone to make a setup for the poles that will work with the factory bumpers as I am too poor for bumpers right now.

Any pics of the 80 bumper sockets?

I definitely would not recommend using the stock bumpers for hammock hangers. Even the lightest aftermarket front bumper (68 lbs) is twice as heavy as the factory bumper (30 lbs). The rear "bumper" consists of plastic covers and a steel crossmember in the center. There isn't anything to build off of to support the weight.

I was thinking something that would penetrate the bumper and actually attached to the frame, just using the bumper as a shell. The same socket concert would apply. Considered the hitch but I really like that socket and a single pipe to fit it. My Hennessey hammock needs about 15 feet and the bumper to bumper measurement accommodates nicely.

Just drilled 4 holes at about 45 degree angle on both sides. That is 1-3/4" sleeve, which will be cut down, and 1-1/2" tube will just slide in. Thanks Krazytoy for the idea.

So jealous ontopofm! I don't have sliders either, not yet. Slider mods may fit the bill as I never planned on getting bumpers until these are mistakenly altered on the trail.

Nice work! You find that they serve many more purposes beyond just hanging the hammock. Plus, its always fun to make stuff up when someone asks you what they are for. I told a guy a week or two ago at the gas station they were gun mounts, he looked at me kinda funny and walked away... LOL
