as a newbie, i do sometimes feel skeeered to post a question. not because of being biatch slapped on this site...it was another site, former life, & a crappy german car.

i like the specifics you guys cover in this forum...things specific to the 80. you know---the clunk, PHH, birf issues, mysterious radiator sludge... don't mean to hijack the thread(another issue that hacks some people off) :flipoff2:

All I know is that as a newbie asking, I think, a fair question I got fairly racked over the coals. Some were smartasses , some were mean( at least it seemed to a newbie) and some were helpful followed by the smartasses and the mean respones again.

A little guidence or a direct responce might have been a better intro into this forum. But nooo....
Enough.
Russ

Russ - You asked your question in chat. everyone gets jumped on there that makes you part of the family. Had you asked it in IH8MUD Comments you wouldn't have been flamed. Look at Junk, the majority of this board only knows him as the guy who flames everyone and talks about their mother. Here he answers questions and has put together that great FAQ.

You will find that those of us who have been here a while will pick on each other in chat, BUT do what ever we can to help in tech.

However, you were not aware of the difference in tone between the forums. I don't know how to fix that. Like Junk says, the forum is what we make of it. Seems some of us like a place to be able to slap each other on the back and poke a little fun. I think of most of the people here as close friends. Junk might flip me off in chat, and then send me a PM to see if I need help with a problem.

I don't believe I have ever jumped on someone in any other forum but Chat. I might run the search for the person and post a few links and show them were to go and say I found it using the search.

We were all kidding in Chat with you Russ, sorry you took it personally. This is the most freindly Auto board I have ever seen. POR is a lot more harsh even in the tech section and you get bounced (topic moved) if they don't feel your post is up to snuff.

So, here in tech we play nice. If you have a question about the website go to the IH8MUD section on the bottom. When you come over to chat be prepared to swap lies and act like a child and blow off steam. AND NEVER take anything in Chat personally.

Hope you stick around long enough to see what I mean and add some barbs of your own.

BTW- How come you don't have an Avatar (Just kiddding . . . )

perhaps its just me, but...Ive noticed less threads being told to search in the 60's and 40's forum with repeat questions (which theres a lot of) however, it seems that often the thread is ignored if its real redundant. guess if i was new, id rather be told politely to search than have a thread ignored. not that theres anything wrong with that :)

I do have to agree with the thought that coming onto a new board that its the responsibility of the new member to get a feel for it before jumping in.
nothing wrong with asking a "stupid" question, but if you have no idea how to take someone with 2-5,000 posts response cause you didnt read any other posts anywhere, thats kind of on you.

i dare anyone here to go ask if 35's will fit there truck on pirate :D

If they fit here they will prolly fit there too....................But in a different place, I think...:D

I'll chime in - I think MoJ said it best in that sometimes a newbie doesn't know the correct terminology to use in search and comes up empty and frustrated. Hell, I remember threads and want to go back t reread and can't find them doing a search. Then again, that could be my aging memory.......hehehe

I think this thread should stay here, as we seem to be the most anal about having newbies do a search first. I think Brent has a pretty good point. Most newbies have no idea what to call things. When I first found this group on SOR, I asked what now seems to be stupid questions. All I ever received was courtesy and respect. I feel that some flippant remarks to newbies has degraded the board and made us look like Aholes. I cringed when I saw some of the replies to newbies. And we are going to get alot more newbies, as the 80 will become the wheeler of choice for many people.
Just give a quick answer and some terms and desciptions for them to search with. Easy and polite.
Cheers,
Sean

We have covered this issue before, and there were some good points made on both sides. A point that one of the regulars brought up is that most of the time people are not going to cover a topic the second time with the same amount of care and detail the topic was cover the first time around and to a newbie, some of this information may be vital. I think we could always be more helpful in directing and guiding newbs, and alot of times telling them to do a search could be the best thing. But the other truth is that some people are just too lazy to go look (they want the answer, but their no willing to take any time to look for it), and that's frustrating for people that have been around and have spent alot of time giving their insite covering an issue before. That get's old for some people, so their reply is either "search" or no reply at all, which would be more of a diservice.

I think one of the most important FAQ's we could generate is a MUD guide for newbies and gracefully request that they read it when signing up. This guide could be setup to be like a oreintation for the new folks, kind of a nickle tour/how to/who's-who's/what's-what/where's-what.

Just my $.02

I think this has all been covered before :flipoff2:

Really, i think it's quit rude to tell a newbie to try the search. One important thing that no one has mentioned is the fact that you don't have to read or respond to any thread on this board. So if it pisses you off that someone is asking a question that has been asked before, just don't read or respond to it.

but i do like the idea of pointing newbies to specific threads. That helps tons.

and as for padding..............i just don't see it happening at the rate it once did..........

Well, back to the main topic...I couldn't agree more with Rick - At least this is what I've wanted to say in the last few times seeing a newbie being hammered...

Frank.

yea me too!

now, to edit this post.........

No, I don't think anyone is condoning hammering newbies here. I'm for any program that will help solicit a response from the knowledgable folks on this forum. If that happens to be "use the search function.. and BTW go 'F' yourself :flipoff2:", then personally I'd rather that then no response at all, albeit neither one is very helpful.

As mentioned the last time we covered this, a search response with some keywords listed is as helpful as anything. We just haven't been including the keywords to help.

I always try to respond to anything I'm knowlegable about even if it's been covered, in an attempt to give back to the forum. But I don't see anything wrong with a properly directed "search assist".

The "no response" mindset is just not very healthy for our forum, IMHO.

I usually do some searching before I post, but my experience has been that often I don't find the info, or there is a different enough twist on it that it's worth asking or providing info anyway.
Besides, without all these posts, what would we be doing all day? Work???

let's keep the place congenial and keep pointing the newbies in the right direction in a friendly manner. After all, they're not like us who never were newbs.... :D

I'm glad someone brought this up, I think it can be rude and non productive to just constantly tell people to use the search, the interactive stlye learning is what makes this site so great, if ya don't want to chime in on a certain subject for what ever reason then just don't, but it can really help some of us to have the ability to bring up subjects that were already brought up to rehash them through and make sure we understand and that new people fill comfortable!
