I've got a 75 FJ55 with a 79 2F motor. Anyone done a H55 install that can give me what I should look for? Do I need to source an 85 and up FJ60 TCase?

Any help links etc will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes you will need a split case, not sure on the spline count (if the years are different), but you will need to figure out a cross member as well. I just made one work in my FJ55. There are a bunch of types, so keep in mind that the tranny mounts will not all work with the cross members from 60 series. Some have angled bolts and some straight.

An H55.... mmmmmm.....sounds good.

Try to get a hold of Gary (shmukster) he had a 55 with that settup, he will be able to give you good advice.

You will need a split case, I thought any after 83 or 84 worked as it had the 5th gear oiler cup molded in the case. The earlier won't have the bigger idler shaft but it will have a slightly lower low range.

Basically right.

The H55f has a 19 spline output, so you need a 19 spline input transfer case. Any 83+ will have what you need with a slight preference for 5/85 through 87 to get the bigger idler shaft.

Any of the t-cases from 60 series will be in the 2.27:1 to 2.29:1 range in low range. Cruiser Outfitters compiled this info and is a good resource.

Bob, this would be a really cool mod!
I remember someone on here buying a 55 and then discovering it had an H55 in it!
I asked for pictures but they never posted.
Now I forget who that was...
Probably the biggest things would be tranny/t-case mounts, t-case shifter mechanism and changing the drive shaft length.

I understand that the H55 and the late H42 w/ the tail spacer mount exactly the same on a 60/62. this needs to have a crossmember from a late 85 on H42 driven 60. Given somewhere to bolt the crossmember to between the frame rails, the crossmember bolts up and then the trans/tcase assembly are supported by the transmission bushing bolted to the transmission case and the crossmember. the tcase floats just like the one piece, but the support is under the tranny rather than the bellhousing. a couple of tabs welded to the frame or even bolted to the inside face of it and then a nice piece of channel under the factory bushing would be all that is needed. the 60s are wider and would make using their crossmember more work in my opinion, but I'm sure could be adapted. bolt it all in and line it all up and then cut to fit and bend to match.

Not all the 5/85 and later have the 38mm input shaft. I have a 11/85 and it was the 34mm. If your not doing reallly heavy wheeling it's not a big issue.

OH yeah...the e brakes. you will have to get a split case w a brake on it, find a brake for it, or go to a later 40 series rear axle w/ built in drum e brake.....that's the kicker. that and the trans tunnel shifter location mods. but it is all doable

You are right as I now recall. The 38mm started in mid 86 sometime.

I have a H55 in my FJ55, I was planning on making a rear crossmember to mount it, actually just used the factory bell housing engine/tranny mounts from the 55. I was a little worried about it at first, not being able to support the weight but it's no problem? I put about 20K miles on it that way with some rough wheeling! I have the transfer mounted brake (rare) that I dont need lol I have modified 60series axles!? That said- I still will build a proper cross member, someday...

This tranny really is a dream! I run 36" Swampers and 4:56 gears, wish I had deeper, 80+mph is not needed in a old 55 with 36's crawl ratio is pretty sweet though

 Aaron

I have a '79 FJ55 that has an H55 in it. It's the truck Pablo Cruise referenced.

I bought it from Greg in North Carolina and shipped it out to So Cal, primarily for the H55 set up. He didn't know it had the 5 speed until one day he reached for 5th. Surprise! The body has rust and I was going to put the drive train in my '75 FJ55.

Anyway, I have other things going on so the truck is for sale.

Old Beach Bob, I may have met you at the hardware store, as we live in the same town.

You can take a look at it if you want or take photos. One thing though is that according to Marv, there are a few ultra rare H55's that come through the floor in the stock location. Mine is one of them, so my install will differ from yours slightly.
My truck was originally owned by a Toyota employee and the conversion was done when new or just after, so it got the rare case.

Let me know if you want to take a look and crawl under it.

So cool!
You should buy it Bob (easy for me to say, ha!)
The rare top plate comes from non-US 40's that came with h55's, so you can allegedly find some in Oz.
As for e-brake, I *think* you can mount the self-adjusting 60 series rear drums on the 55 rear axle, but then you need custom cable made.

No-the mounting flange on the axle is wrong so no way to bolt in the backing plates. You could swap in a late 40 axle with the e-brake at the rear axle.

Do you know if this is the case for the late '79 rear axle with 3:73 gears?

Tucker

Great question. Mine has never had an e-brake since I purchased it (hence the smashed rear left corner from the previous owners driveway and the smashed rear right corner courtesy of my wife in our driveway... but you should have seen the neighbors full size Ford van... no contest with an FJ55!)

Being a '79, it has the 3:73 rear end and I never investigated the e-brake options, if any.

One thing I'll say though is that tranny is NICE!

Easy to tell. If the backing plate mounts with 6 small bolts, it won't work. If it mounts with 4 larger bolts, it is potentially compatible.

H55 in a 55 Sweeeeet!!!

Yeah i think we met one morning at the hardware store. you shocked me when you not only knew what a FJ55 was, but you knew the year!

I got the H55 in - but i had to cut and patch the floor. just added more dynomat and she's tighter and quieter than ever. I still need to fab some brackets for my 60 series cross member to give it a little more strength. I did add a TSM transfer case mount parking brake. It was about $300.00 and works pretty good, but i'm not going to test it in the sluice box.

Love the 5 speend and swapped pumkins with a 60 so now i'm runing 3.70s. Can cruise at 75 easy until the LR tank runs dry.

flag me down in town if you want to see how the P-brake works.

just need to swap my Nippondenso AC over from my 71 and get my PS steering stuff on and I'm ready to retire. just picked up a diesel pusher Motor home to tow my pig around with. Very strange how tthe Motor home actually gets a little better fuel milage than the pig?

Do you remember what length e-brake cable you had to have made to make this work with the H55? Ordering the final bits for my swap ;)
