Got a P/N for that? Finally got around to installing an OEM 4runner fuel skid. Although not as beefy as the aftermarket options, this should provide a bit more protection compared to the original!

This is the way to go: Buying a 4runner tank skid new from Toyota has got to be as much as much as any of the aftermarket stuff, but $50 used is a deal. The Toyota/Lexus factory skids are also stronger than people think - more than enough for incidental hits but still worth upgrading if you play in the rocks or make dumb, but funny, decisions like me)From google, looks to be: Part Number: 7760660200.
I got mine off fbook marketplace, you should be able to find one pretty easy as the 4runner crowd upgrade their armor. I scored this one for only $50.
BTW, nice thing about this install, the 4runner skid uses the same mounting holes and hardware, just need to get 2 extra screws for the 2 supports in the back.
Thought about this a lot. I was wrong. They stop way better. I am tire limited now and not brake limited. Just bedded the 4Runner and it's even more noticeable. That being said the 4Runner is being noisy. I accept it's part of the process but my partner is less than thrilled. I had warned them up front, too. So hopefully they finish breaking in soon. How do the Greenstuffs stop? I'm throwing in a set this weekend. 33s made my brakes a bit less responsive than I'd like.
Slightly aired down I could get a stop on loose gravel with almost no ABS interaction. The GX has 50 lb Revo LT E load range tires and the 4Runner has really light michelin all seasons 245/60r20. Both vehicles are within 100# of stock weight. Just so the variables are counted for as well.Very happy with mine so far!
On the way home I lowered the window and heard a faint squeak at wheel RPM. Maybe there's a rock jammed between the rotor and heat shield, but I haven't been wheeling in a couple months so I'd still be surprised. Hope I don't have to actually fix anything. I've been enjoying the low maintenance costs.
I grew up on dirt roads, so it was a common occurrence once I got a car with disk brakes. I wouldn't be too bothered by it myself, but this is my wife's daily and she pointed it out so I'd better do something.I've had that happen on street cars. Usually backing up ejects the rock but it might take more than a few feet. I think I had to remove a wheel and pry the rock out once.
I have to laugh because as an ex professional cabler I still do the same thing even though I know better.Pro Tip: If you yank your winch ground cable to get it reconnected to your new battery, and think "I wonder if I pulled it loose at the control box" you should confirm that the winch still works before you pull cable out on the winch...
Interesting to see him converting from crusty, solid-axle junk
As a former XJ owner and current middle-aged dad, I feel seen.
I loved my XJ, but what a piece of crap compared to everything else I've owned. It was a 2 door/ 4 banger with good axles and low gears. I was replacing parts every weekend, and wheeling it once a month. Fun while it lasted, but when I saw my chance to upgrade to a Land Cruiser in 2018, I jumped at it.FWIW, I really do love the XJ. Tons of them are still running around here. Most of them are beat to crap from time in the woods. It's extremely rare to see any of them that aren't beat-to-crap. They were on my off-roader list when I started looking to replace my previous Forester, but I struck them due to the lack of any clean models for sale and ancient tech and safety.
Getting a little older also. I enjoy the heated/cooled seats, quiet interior, nice sound system, reliability, etc. so on that note....
