They are very rare here in the Midwest. A couple weeks ago I got another "Is that a 4Runner?" question :). No one around here really even knows what they are, especially when they are modded/lifted.

On our 5K mile trip to WY/MT last year I saw exactly 1 modded GX (and did chat with the driver, who was from all they way out in NJ) and a number of stock GXs (including one 460 that had towed a camper all the way up from TX). On our trip to CO in 2024 I don't recall seeing a single GX on any of the trails.
Mid-COVID when my wife and I did our drive to New England looking for a lobster dinner, I don't recall seeing any, nada, zip, zero GX's that had even after market wheels and tires.
But again, that was COVID...

I see a lot of built 470/460s now in Pacific Northwest. Almost daily see a built 470.

Stock vehicles daily... getting gas at Costco last week.. 3 other 460s waiting along with me.

2020 is when I bought mine :). If anything "Peak GX" seems to have passed a bit as folks move into the Bronco and newer 4Runner/Tacoma/GX550 platforms.

IIRC someone on here, probably Western US based, has a lifted white GX with black wheels and a flat aftermarket roof rack and tows a camper. I swear I saw pics on the pic thread but I can't find them again. I passed such a rig which was going NB on I-25 between Las Vegas and Santa Fe, NM two days ago. Cool setup.

I'm on day 7 of a trip today, and I've seen exactly two modded GXs in 2600 miles. The other was black and lifted but no other obvious mods and I don't even recall where I saw it. Seen tons of modded JLs, 4Rs, Broncos. I've seen more FJs than GXs even, and the newest one of those is a decade old now!

Keep an eye out for me and wave f you are the rare GX owner in the west. We camped near Heber AZ last night in the Sitgreaves NF and are doing some national monuments and state parks near Sedona and Flagstaff today before heading to the CA line tonight.

There are lots (GXs) in my area but rarely modded. I see more bring-backs (J70 Prados) than J120/150s. Probably as many J70 HDs as well. One 470 I see every day with a lettered Lexus grille. Other than a few rare examples I am in modded-Jeep hell.

Yep, I bought mine in 2021 when you had to commit, sight unseen to a tacoma or 4runner. Waited 2 months for an allocation and then just got sick of driving my JK so canceled the allocation attempt and got a GX. Since there was a half dozen available for test drive within 100 miles of me.

As soon as I drove it I was sold.

Oh man, there’s 4 or 5 modded GX460’s just in my neighborhood in Denver (that I know of).
Oh I see a lot.of mall crawler GXes. Not many on the trails. Maybe 2 i have seen wheeling.

So my exhaust pipe is just f-ing managed.

Its a really messed up looking diamond shape that has to be super restrictive.

Its been bent completely flat a few times.

Has anyone just cut the pipe a bit behind the muffler and just put a down sweep on it?

Or maybe cut it on the curve just in front of the resonator?

I am going to have some really big repairs this year (front drive shafts and rear axle re-build) still so dont really want to drop more money on a carvin dump if I can just remove a little piping for now and maybe do that carvin dump next season.

I cut mine at an angle right behind the rear axle. No change in noise and gives it a nice clean look. I’ll take a couple pics for you and post in the next day or so.

You can dump it right past the muffler (before the axle), but it will kick up a lot of dust off-road in a drier climate like CO (as the exhaust is directed straight down). I'd suggest cutting it off behind the rear tire and in front of the resonator instead, but keeping it angled outward instead of down. It should be a pretty cheap fix for a muffler shop to cut off the bent piece and weld on a short piece of new tubing.

I was in the DFW metroplex for a couple days last week and saw several dozen GXs and probably half a dozen lifted ones (460 and 470). I'm a Texas Ex myself, and one of the reasons I moved back home to Missouri is that Texas has a severe shortage of public lands and places to wheel/hike/cycle/etc. (whereas MO has both in spades). So it was a bit surprising to see so many nicely-built GXs running around so far from good trails. But, I suppose Toyota-USA is headquartered there, and Texans have great taste in rigs!
I'm north of Dallas and they're everywhere. There are several built 460s just in my neighborhood. Lifted 550s/LC250s with wheel/tires are very common now as well.

We had meetings with some European colleagues. They absolutely loved the American car culture they saw in Texas and the fact that we can freely modify our vehicles. It's all but impossible for them to buy anything other than a tiny Skoda or Kia, and they are all but prohibited from modifying them. Telling them about my GX, they said it would be confiscated immediately from their roads :).

Usually we have meetings in Boston or Chicago, but those cities don't hold a candle to TX in terms of car culture :).

i see toyota trucks lifted on kings or 8100s, but keep their stock side steps and not a single skid plate other than factory. that level mall crawling should be criminal.
At least they're lifting them properly. I see 1000s of idiots in Dallas running drop bracket lifts with 6"+ spacers front and rear on their full-size trucks. Wheels sticking 10" past the fenders with low profile all terrain tires.

Those are fairly common up here too. About a 2:1 ratio of diesel trucks built like that vs. half-ton trucks. The IFS rigs all have the Chinese made Rough Country drop brackets. The diesels usually have brightly-painted traction bars. When I do see those trucks pulling/hauling something, it's typically a riding lawnmower that on a trailer small enough a Civic could pull it.

One F150 I saw running around had thick enough spacers that the inside of the wheel/tire was sticking at least an inch past the brake rotor.

Thats how Weld County and Wyoming are.

Great time to invest in a bearing company.
