I normally hear a lot of hate about long term reliability of the X-REAS system on the limited 4R.

I assume it can be torn off pretty easily and re-fitted with normal shocks when it fails or leaks in the future.
Yep. It was dead by 105k on our 2016. Replaced with 5100s

My neighbor used to have a Land Rover back when there was a dealership in town. Once a month or so a flatbed tow truck would have to come take it into town. And that was the times I seen it. She now has a Mercedes G Wagon. The flatbed only shows up around every other month now.

I've been off roading since the mid 70's. You can have my Lux with air bags when you pry them from my cold dead hands LOL. I do tow around a ton a couple times a week in the summer hauling my Polaris Ranger to shoots. And hunting in Canada and the North Shore of Lake Superior in the fall and love the self leveling bags. Even my Ranger has self leveling rear suspension. With arched A arms and 14" of ground clearance.

Every suspension is a compromise of one type or another. My Baja T|X Taco had Bilstein 6112 TRD custom valved shocks from the factory. When I test drove it hit a straight section of dirt road near the dealership and was amazed at how it handled the washboards. But I was doing 50+ mph on them, in real life most washboards I am on are curvy often icy roads. At slower speed the jarring will knock your eye teeth down to your piss sack. At higher speed it was also easier to "float" right off the road due to loss of traction on the washboards in the corners. Back to slow is fast.

I would Fluid Film the frame every fall and just did a quick shot on the shocks. They still rusted out and failed at less than 4 years and Toyota replaced them. Those lasted another 4 years and only ~40K before they gave out. When the original ones were replaced under warranty I installed Firestone Ride Rite air bags. They only take a couple of minutes to inflate\deflate but when you do it a lot is a PITA. The Firestone bags gave out at around 4 maybe 5 years and so did the replacement shocks. Replaced those with Bilstein 5100 and stiffer OME springs and didn't bag it. It was a compromise.

IME most factory shocks and bags only last 80-90K. The GX bags and shocks will go well over 100K some have gone to 200K+ I can live with that and will likely replace them with OEM at around 100K. Having to rebuild custom shocks on a DD is a trip to crazy town and one that I am not taking. Did I mention that all suspensions are a compromise of one type or another yet?

I ended up with the GX when I went to the Toyota dealer in town to look at a 2023 T4R Pro. On the test drive it had the same issue as my Taco it couldn't get out of its own way. Same when the FJ came out and I ended up with an Xterra, still only a V6 but Vroom Vroom! Sounds like you know what I am talking about LOL. Xterra was fine until the strawberry milkshake of death.

Not retired yet but I retired from the Navy 30 years ago last month. And on the 11th will receive my first SS check but still working. Full retirement age plus 1 year so nothing to loose by drawing now. And will until they piss me off or a couple more years which ever comes first. I was looking for what was hopefully my last vehicle. First 4x4 was a 77 FJ55 Iron Pig and thought it would be cool to get a LC250 but chickened out at the last minute due to it being a first year release vehicle.

Up until the GX I was more the bare bones stick a hose in the rig to wash out the mud and blood. Now I am ruined for life I can never go backwards, I didn't know what I didn't know. I can drive someplace for more than an hour and get out ready to go not spending 15 minutes or so getting my joints and body to work again.

At 60K and only put on ~10K a year so have a few years to go yet to make a decision. With the cost of new vehicles leaning toward keeping the GX. And at 90K doing a full waterside replacement plus plugs, suspension, etc. Still be cheaper in the long game. But there is a point of diminishing returns as a vehicle gets older. And the 460 is not as bullet proof as many would have you believe. The LX700h OT has my attention but there is no way in hell I'm paying 3 times what I paid for my first stick house for one.

As to a Ubiquitous vehicle world wide it would be the Chevy Suburban. Those huge land yachts that take up the whole trail and then some, hard pass. In the North woods second would be a Dodge (now Ram) truck. Another hard pass have that T shirt many years ago and went through 2 trannies plus a rebuild in 120K. The trucks are easy to work on but I don't want to HAVE to work on my rig anymore. Especially in the woods miles from anywhere with no cell phone reception.
I’ve towed a handful of times with RAHC—Home Depot dumping trailers and towable augers—and a trick I always got a kick out of was raising the rear to HI when parked, dropping the trailer jack until it touched the ground, then un-locking the coupler and lowering the rear to LO to un-couple. And reversing the steps to re-couple.

I don’t have space at my house to keep the GX attached while I’m loading/unloading a trailer, so this saved a lot of hand cranking. If we had a camper or a trailer we towed frequently, I’d strongly consider spending the coin to keep RAHC going (not just for this little perk). Maybe those extended bags from Airbag Man in Australia.

This greatly simplified trailer hooking/unhooking for our camper, especially when using WDH hitches.

Aux air bags inside coils are also a nice compromise. Reliability of coils with the load-leveling of bags when needed. Well worth the $120 for a kit.

That's why I'll take the slow boring box that is a GX, because in my 5 years 5 months and 71k miles of ownership (134k to 205k) it's seen a tow truck exactly 0 times. 😆

Love the capabilities of Land Rovers, Jeeps, etc. but can't get past the reliability issues. When I'm in the middle of Death Valley (literally) I want to make sure I'll get out of there... Alive and in one piece.

💯 Cannot be said any better. I'm 100% sure our 2019 JGC Trailhawk with the HEMI would of seen lots of mechanic visits by now. I miss its capability, interior, and performance...but not it's looming mechanic visits.

Spent the weekend doing some snow wheeling in WV and one of our crew had a pretty sick LR3. He said he was looking at GXs too but found too good of a deal on the Land Rover and he has 5 other cars to use when its in the shop.
He also upstaged me in fanciness when he broke out the homemade jalapeño poppers and bacon wrapped dates, still warm, for everyone as a trail snack.

According to the newest AI models the LX/100/200/300 are the safest trucks on the road and the GX is the second safest.

I’m a fan of your setup. Nicely done.

One of my buddies always makes luxury jokes when we go wheeling. At one camp morning he said "that's what happens when you bring a Lexus in the woods" after I remarked how good my home-roasted Burundi coffee tasted in the backcountry.

He later went and bought his own 2020 GX460.

When you consider how much a new pickup truck costs, todays Lexus seems more like an economy vehicle. By that I mean its a really good bang for your buck, at least the gx460 was. The 550 may literally go bang and you'll be out of bucks. 🤣

Huge bang for your buck. $30-40K for a nice well-maintained GX or $70K+ for a new F150.

GX550 prices are bonkers. But, my GX470 had a MSRP of ~$50K in 2007. That's $77K in 2026 dollars, which is basically the same as GX550 MSRPs today (though, dealers appear to be selling them for well above MSRP).

I paid $39k for my 2018 460 in 2021. In the years that I have been getting press cars regularly, the *least* expensive 1500-class truck I have tested had an MSRP of $72,770.

The one thing I seldom see mentioned is using RAHC for an instant lift of 2-3" and the trailer hitch likes to hit bottom off road. It works well as on demand lift. It automatically lowers above 18-20 mph but if I am someplace where I need additional lift I'm not doing hold my beer and watch this driving speed.

There is a lot to be said for the airbags. I've noticed that those that say they leak early, aren't good, etc. are the ones that don't own them....

Airbag Man bags may not be out of the question down the road for me when the time comes.

My driveway is long but steep. I have to use wheel chocks behind the trailer wheels although more times than not use pieces of firewood. Always have some handy and they work well. Hooking the trailer up can be tricky it is fine on level ground but the ball doesn't always seat while on an incline. With the Taco I would usually hit the gas then slam the brake to finish dropping it in place. Trailer is lightweight and easy to move but on an incline not so much.

With the GX I just hit a button to finish seating it and don't worry about the trailer tongue coming off and slamming into the rear bumper, I still get a kick out of it. I have to drive up to the road and load the buggy on flat ground, I tried loading it on the trailer while on the incline in the driveway. Once, that was enough.

Okay, so we're rabbit trailing a wee bit here, but just the other night, we had some bacon that's been in the fridge for a while and needed to use it, so my wife made bacon wrapped dates with a smidge of cream cheese inside. 🩷
We had them for dinner.

Seeing how this is the B.S. thread so hopefully not OT....

I do a lot of smoking and I've always called poppers ATB's, atomic buffalo turds. Sitting next to a couple big ole fatties. NO not that type of fatty, sausage roll stuffed with cheese and other goodies. One with a decent bacon weave.

There is a smoking meat thread on Tacoma World I have quite a few posts in there. Including my no boil mac and cheese. Lot of people have tried it and love it. Took me awhile to tune it but works well. My no boil mac and cheese with lobster topped with cheese, bacon wrapped scallops, ATB's, and bacon wrapped Prime grade ribeye cap steak (spinalis dorsi). Because all good recipes start with first you cook a pound of bacon.

During hunting season the dogs run a lot and if you feed them in the morning they can get a twisted stomach and die from running hard. So they get fed at the end of the day and most of us follow suit. Light if any meal from breakfast throughout the day then supper is all out with no stops. And have noticed that most that hunt are pretty decent cooks. I know all of my friends are.

First you go out and shoot a ruff grouse. Then coat it with shore lunch and cook in bacon grease. With the Admirals special wild rice.

We save our woodcock for SD and cook Woodcock Cristina Di Beccaccia at least once.

Prime grade steaks are my go to. I carry at least one charcoal grill with me everywhere and charcoal. And my grill grates, you can have my grill grates when you pry them from my cold dead hands LOL. Sear and slide

Before it starts to warm up I need to smoke some cheese but have plenty of time yet.

If you own OBD Link.. I didn’t test Fusion w/vehicle pack you can now perform customizations like Carista.

Really... REALLY!!!
You are a corrupter!
Here I am losing weight so I can make my next Army promotion (rank) in a few months and YOU have to post this!!!! :D
Although, most of what you posted would not be a problem for me to eat, as it looks mostly to be protein with green veggies.
I've got a puddle on my desk from drooling. just looking at those photos!

Coil conversion complete!

Drove it around a bit and it rides great (as it did before). Will have to see over time if I can tell a difference. The back rides 0.5” or so higher than with the bags, but that makes sense since it’s unloaded.
