Luke's bumper!!

Yep, you got it! I ordered it last Thursday and it should be arriving early this coming week. Just the basic DIY kit for now as I am currently running an interior spare tire carrier. Eventually I will add the dual swingouts. I'll post some pics as I build it up.

sweet!
I love mine.
Notch a 45 degree cut, about an inch tall on the bottom edge of the frame rails to make sure it sucks in nice and tight for your bolt holes to line up. make sure you saved all your bolts from the removal of the spare tire support, you'll be going into those holes again. While yer at it, just go get new bolts for those 6 holes and make them another 1/4" longer or so. Chase the threads out with the old bolts to clean it out from all the built up muck and mud. Get some nice big washers too. You'll lprobably have to clean out a hole or two from teh powder coating, but no biggie. And paint the rails where you just cut them. You wont ever see them again, but that's not where you want rust to start.

oh, and resist the urge to use the bottle opener until you have it all bolted up!

Thanks for the tips Pablo!

Hijack on: Are you running any wheel spacers with your FJC alloys? Hijack off.

Yes, I am running 1-1/2" spacers which puts the wheels flush with the flares and still able to stuff in the wheel well. The tires are 35x12.5x17's.

FedEx Delivers

Paid for the bumper last Thursday afternoon and Fed Ex delivered today. I wasn't expecting it that qwick but decided to get a head start before I take it to my buddies shop and get the welding started. Tonight's progress: I made my finish cuts on the frame rails and ground down the welds from the cross member brackets. Then had to cut the resonator off to make the PS side wing fit and then bolted on the wings.

Notice the holes in the side of the wings. Are these a new design and are they for a high-lift jack? I never noticed them on other Luke bumpers.

I emailed Luke and he confirmed that those notched holes are indeed for a high-lift jack, pretty cool idea, I think.

More progress

I finally got a chance to do a little more work on the bumper yesterday. What better way to learn how to weld than to buy a 4x4 labs bumper and just get in there and do it, lol? My buddy let me use his welder at his shop, thank God the welds had to be hit with a grinder otherwise I would have left this to a professional. I tacked up the bumper while still on the rig, then removed and tacked on the crossmember, hitch receiver, and gussets. Then welded the joints inside and out, followed by a good grinding. Was really surprised this only took me 4 hours. I am going to let my buddy do the visible welds on the recovery hooks, hitch receiver opening, and side wing top bars. Here are some pics of yesterdays progress.

Nice work!

My bro-in-law gave me an old stick welder I have been wanting to try out. Guess I need a new project.:D

Thanks for the comments, it's really been a fun project and good learning experience. I hope to get the finishing touches done soon and get it into the powdercoat shop.

Curious how much powder coating will run you. Any idea? Looking good by the way. Makes me want to spend $$$ :)

One of my good friend's buddy is the owner of Electro Tech Powder Coating in San Marcos so I am getting a "Bro Deal" on the powder coat, cash for cost. :D He already has done my sliders in the krinkle black finish (stole the idea from Vistataco). It's a nice nonslip finish but it doesn't stay as clean as a smooth finish.....but it is an OFFROAD vehicle after all.

Any updates? Can't wait to see it completed.
