18th Annual Great Smokey Mountain Trail Ride

Tellico OHV

Yes is it time to start planning for this event. Actually we started before the last one was done. So mark you calendars now. Go ahead and tell the boss you need these dates off.

Format will be similar to the way it has been in the past.

Going to be a big turnout this year. Expecting over 200 vehicles and 300 people.

Thanks. PM me if you have any questions.

Marshall,
Thanks for the heads up. In your notice, you mentioned that Crawfords has been reserved for these dates. Have you also reserved the cabins at Crawfords too?

Again thanks

Yes and no.

The big house on the hill in the back a group has already reserved. I reserved one of the smaller cabins for me and my family today. I believe that leaves everything else open.

Marshall,
Thanks for the status on the cabins.

For the first time since 95 I am going to miss this ride. Hate to but the Military has other plans. I'll be there next year!

Later,

You know Todd I haven't thought about that. That is a great idea! I will do that. You make sure that you put it up and take a pic of the pic. I'm sure our WT brothers would be proud. It would be my way of PARTICIPATING! You know how Kowboy likes for us to participate.

Later,

I know everyone is wondering what will happen to GSMTR. We have a plan. We will post it up this weekend. Stay tuned. We are not going down without a fight.

Here is the skinny on the new GSMTR. I should have more details as we get closer. We had to wait on sending out most sponsor letters due to not know what the format would be. Now we know. As they come in I'll make sure to let everyone know. Online raffle will start in the next week or so.

As I'm sure you are aware, Tellico is under severe threat with a recently announced "temporary" closure until 2011. All along, this years GSMTR was about raising funds for the "Rescue Tellico" effort. Even with Tellico temporarily closed, we are not giving up on supporting and fighting for the cause. So, what does that mean for GSMTR '09?

GSMTR '09 will still happen but it will be a Rally even more highly focused on raising funds for "Rescue Tellico".

The event will run from Thursday thru Sunday, June 18th through the 21st.
We will have a parts swap Friday as well as a Rock Climb Competition
We will have a tug-o-war on Saturday
We will as a group drive through Murphy Saturday to show support for the local community.
We will as a group drive up the skyway and back through trail 1.
We will have a big raffle at the event on Saturday
We will have a 5 big item online raffle
We will have dinner for Friday and Saturday night.

We will donate all (100%) profits to the Rescue Tellico fund for the fight to open Tellico back up. The event will be a pay as you go event. Book your reservations at Crawfords, and pay for meals, raffles etc... at the event.

As far as your currently pre-paid registration dollars, all will be refunded in full. Those of you who wrote checks will receive a check within the next 10 days. Those of you who paid through Paypal, you have a choice of check or Paypal (there are fees associated with that). Please just let me know how you'd prefer to be refunded. If your address has changed from the time you registered, let me know your new address.

And, PLEASE support the "Rescue Tellico" cause, don't change your plans to attend this years GSMTR! This may be the most important event of the year. The cause needs support, financial as well as through a show of support for the community. If your plan now is to go somewhere else during GSMTR your letting them win. We have a chance to make a difference. A very big difference. I will also promise you will have a really good time. It's a beautiful place.

Thanks,

The Upstate Cruisers BOD

Roger,
Leading question ... Why not do something in Tellico Plains to show our support for them? It was my understanding that the entire Tellico Plains community supported keeping the trails open. However, the mayor of Murphy and a vocal following in Murphy supported closing the trails. Therefore, why not spend our money and show our support in Tellico Plains? I know the logistics work against Tellico Plains when starting at Crawfords, but we are not advocating taking the easy way out on the situation either.

We could very well do the ride through Tellico Plains. I will get in touch with the Chamber of Commerce and see what they can do. I've already been in talks with them prior to the event being changed.

Thank you for all the ideas. Keep them coming. Turnout is still looking good.

Marshall,
Thanks. Back when event central was at McNabb, we usually went to town once a day. It was normally for food (dinner at the diner, breakfast or lunch at the cafe on the square, plus ice cream cones at the convenvience store) which was always good and the people were great. In fact one morning at breakfast the cafe needed to get some more milk, so they left Melissa and I to watch the place. After GSMTR moved to Crawfords, we usually took time on Wednesdays to drive over to Tellico Plains to make the rounds; including the museum (which is interesting for being so small).

One thing I haven't even thought about is back when we didn't know where we would have the event. I went ahead a reserved McNabb for thurs-sun. Maybe we could tie McNabb into the event someway. Maybe do lunch there or something. Could give people a place to hang out for an hr or so during the ride.

Ideas?

Roger,
Looking at the schedule, it appears that Thursday night is an open meal night. Will you be at Crawfords Thursday night? If so, would you be interested in grilling up some of your special pork chops? I can bring the pork chops like last year.

Any other plans or logistics that might be good to sort out early?

Right now I am only planning a week at a time as I wait to see how my wife is doing. When we get closer and I am sure I will be able to go, we can make plans.

Roger,
I am sorry to be so thoughtless. I hope you can make, but her recovery and care are more important.
