My pig decided to give me some troubles right before bird season starts. I was coming home from watching some Monday Night Football at my sis and brother in law's place. About 3 miles from home I could smell gear oil burning, I hopped out with the flashlight and looked at it looked like I lost a rear t-case seal and it was slinging it on the exhaust. It started whining a little bit more than normal, but I drove it the last bit home. I went to drive it into the shop the other night and it has a definate growl now. So I pulled the floorboard panel off and it is definately a transfer case issue by the feel of the vibration and growling. After searching I found that the idler shaft in the t-case is usally the culprit for the whining noise. I plan on pulling the t-case and opening it up to see how bad it is. My pig is a 69 with the old 3 speed in it. I've posted a while ago about a 79 pig that a farmer has sitting and I've struck a deal to buy it for 300 bumps on the head. The body is completely trashed, it has a drivers rear turn signal lens that is salvageable but that's seriously about it body wise. I'm contemplating taking the front disk axle, 4 speed and 2f out of it but have a couple of questions. 1st is that I kinda like the old 3 speed on the column, but could see that having a synched trans would be nice. As well as the more reliable 2f. Also if I used the 2f, it's my understanding that I would need a later model hood. Due to the carb and intake height is that correct? Could I use the 1f intake and carb and install on the 2f? The hood is trashed on the donor pig so that's out of the question. My pig is quite original and I kinda like it that way, I don't know which way to go here. Help me make up my mind. Also where'd the best place to source t-case parts I may need if I decide to rebuild the 3 speed t-case. Thanks in advance my friends.
