Thanks Steve. The towing capacity and large can on it are what I found most interesting. The lack of 4wd kind of concerns me to some degree and it definitely won't be usable for much more than towing, but for that I suspect it would do a very good job.

The "leaks" made me scratch my head a little. And as I mentioned above, I'm not real interested in another project. For me, a 4 door 4wd dually 7.3 superduty is probably gonna be where I land. The Massey is heavy, but an 80 plus a samurai would likely top it in the weight department. Guessing around 10k plus trailer so gonna need a healthy gcvwr.

Plus something like that will be a little more usable for other around town and farm stuff.

I saw that linked over on the MS forum...

My thoughts on the International noted...align with whats already been said. What I can add is...some of those trucks are dogs...you have to be careful about their towing capacity. Looks like someone has done some custom work in that..I've never seen a SRW in a international (there may be...?). Some of those trucks max around 60-65mph and can't tow their own weight...better get someone that knows those models to ensure you don't buy a slug if interested.

The older IH were plain jane on the inside....no telling what the interior looks like ( I did not see any interior shots when I looked before). Cools things like A/C, Cruise / pwr windows may not be in the mix. Anyway some of those trucks are deceptive....they would appear to be good tow rigs...but in reality...not so. At least for me...I want to be able to do the speed limit in comfort fully loaded down with whatever I'm going to max out safely towing. Hard to find those truck in 4wd...or at least I've seen few of them.

You might want to surf around on pirate and other sites to see about mil surplus trucks (not the tactical ones, but the ones like pictured...civilian type trucks custom ordered for fed service...mostly with crew cabs and 4wd and some have custom work bodies on them, mainly international. The Air Force and BLM and other federal agencies have long bought crew cab trucks of similar configuration and some with 4wd..etc. Flight crew trucks, fire trucks, transports... but..again some of those things do good to pull their own weight...be careful before going there. (former Job back years ago) We had a wrecker one time based on similar setup....it was bad....loaded you never could hit 50 except on long down hill runs (loaded with truck of similar weight)...and that was normal. We did not keep it long and I don't know why the owner bought it...other than he had no clue about the truck. As you probably know its hard to gauge how well something pulls just driving it unloaded...

says auto trans I think..but then says 2speed rear....I don't' recall ever seeing a two speed rear axle with auto trans? I don't think the guy listed the towing capacity or rating for that truck....you have to be careful...what may be on the data plate may not line up with mods that the guy may have done to the truck...

can be some rough riding @#$@ machines...

So I am beginning to see why it has such a vague listing. Definitely don't have time or $$ to take on something like that right now.

We'll just save our pennies and look for a solid rig in a year or so.

i've been wanting a crew cab 4wd too....but I'll have to stay in the 2500 / 3500 size range for various reasons. Likely to be GM flavor. Ive been leaning towards 3500 SRW..been "eyeballing" a few I've hunted across the web.

Interesting, more and more that one sounds like it may be a frankenIH. I guess we will just wait for a 1 ton rig that will carry erbody and pull all our junk around. :meh: we got some time. Most our pennies are earmarked for house stuff these days.

I was curious and so looked around...apparently I was wrong....some trucks came configured with 2speed rear axle and auto trans. In that case I presume you use the 2speed rear axle like a hi-low range box and you don't split gears like you would on a conventional manual transmission with two speed rear axle (my assumption), because I'm not sure you could do that with an auto due to applied torque.

The truck I mentioned above as a wrecker in the shop I worked at long ago..had a straight up manual 5 speed with no spliter/2speed rear. Thats part of what made it such a dog...it did not have sufficient gears to span the torque range...4th and 5th gear were just about useless towing..and you have too big of gap between 3rd then 4th and 5th...which might have been addressed better if the truck had come with a 2speed rear.

In the old days it was common for a single rear axle truck to have a splitter on the rear axle and you would basically split ever gear with a switch on the shifter and the transmission was generally a 5 speed. SO you had low-high in 1st and then through every gear....shifting low 1st, high first, then low 2nd then high second....etc. Some of the basic 5 speeds were just not setup to tow with and probably were not even made for that job..they were probably configured as light duty box van trucks that someone decided to customize or someone configured the truck wrong when they ordered it for whatever the intended purpose.

something like this For Sale: - 1998 fl70
or what Roger runs would be a better truck that what was posted initially.

been trying to hunt down a mini truck t-Case for awhile now but saw this over on the NC page and thought of you. Warn 8274 for $600

For Sale/Wanted

Should have said something early . I have a 85' t-case just sitting in the floor .

Well dang it man, this was supposed to help Matty but looks like it's my day. Text msg inbound!

Thanks for the bump @TeddyBoy that seems like a pretty good price for a working unit. Will bookmark it mentally for when I get back to wrenching. This whole house thing has pretty much knocked out most any wrenching project other than basic maintenance. Maybe in a month or so I can get some things sorted out and cleaned up so I can actually work on something and not just be aggravated that my shop is FULL OF SH!T....

I drove down to Birmingham and picked up a trans from Hagen last weekend. It came with spare 3FE that may or may not be worth rebuilding. So hopefully when we get the house ready to move into I can clean out a spot and get the trans swapped into the deuce. Then time to start working on the suspension and other goodies on the great white Bruce.

I want that grill guard!

Man, I wish I still had it. I got rid of it when we sold our house. Didn't have a place to put it. Sorry man, but I will keep my eyes open for one. They come up from time to time.

That lx in the salvage yard outside of shelbyville has a grill guard, providing they didn't destroy it when it got moved.

I forgot about that thing... I wonder if they ever sold any parts off of it or if it is still sitting there with all those Gold plated parts still intact.

They moved it back from the front row but it's still there. And with their prices probably still pretty intact.

I have no experience with them, but @jason in tn has talked to them a few times and they are apparently very proud of their junk.

Well, I picked up a set of 861/862 OME stock height coils from @FJ60Cam this week for the Deuce. I've been looking at shock options as well. Not wanting to blow the budget, but want something decent. I plan to put the iron man pucks on top so should and up with about 1.5" over stock height. Read some good things about the proComp 9000s, but autoanything is running a sale and I can get the fox 2.0s for a Benjamin per corner. The doestch 8000s are a little less per corner and I had good luck with them on the WJ. That will be the next piece to sort.

I am also looking for a brown flare to replace the one that was missing in the Front DS fender.

With those pieces falling into place the current plan for "the brown one" is as follows:

  • Swap the trans from Bertha (replace rear main while I'm in there) H42 Swap/split case on deck
  • Find a DS brown flare and reinstall the fronts
  • Have the hood and fender paint cleaned up and re-cleared
  • Swap the ARB off the 91 on
  • Install 861/862 coils and Ironman spacers
  • New Shocks and a steering stabilizer
  • tune up
  • Radio
  • Rebuild knuckles
  • tag, title and drive
There are some misc. interior parts I need to get sourced to replace, but that should get it back to a nice driver to putt around in.

Now this along with pretty much every other project I have had on hold since last May will hopefully get going sometime in June after we get moved. That should give me some time to get the last of the parts pulled together.
