Disclaimer: I grew up with Black Labs and I love them...

But we have a Standard Poodle. He is a great dog. Well mannered, intelligent (maybe, too intelligent), mature at a young age, has a bark that will make an intruder poop himself, doesn't shed or stink, and is very protective of wife and kids. One of the few dogs that will take on a bear. As a puppy, his parents taught him to chase off bears in Sayward, BC. He`s never had a poodle cut and doesn't even know he's supposed to be a fag. Calm as a cucumber. Other crazy dogs will come and run barking at him, challenging him to a fight. He won't bark or even tense up. Just look at them with a WTF?

As gay as it sounds, I'd highly recommend a Standard Poodle.

Are you still trying to feed that kid a dog? All he wants is a tunyluny and some goldfish.

Meh:meh:-my brother had 2, not great with his 5(!) kids. Too small, too yippy, not enough fun. PIA actually.

ours is at the big end of the size range 25lb, he definitely has yappy moments, but having a dog that doesn't shed is pretty sweet!
As small dogs go, they're very athletic, and can keep up to most people for quite a while on bikes/jogging/etc.

we grew up with lab/border collie crosses, and they were all great dogs... but we had a good sized chunk of land to keep them on

did he have the dogs before the kids? friend of ours have a couple that they had for several years before the kids, and the interaction is completely different than our dog/kids.

Why???

I think OZCAL has a standard poodle and would say the same...

have heard nothing but good things about standard poodles. also, I have heard that the navy seals actually use them for some operations.

intelligence
webbed feet
no smell
no shed
fierce
and really sharp teeth

Is your property or yard fenced in?

Do you have an HOA?

Do you have weight restrictions for canines on your CC&R provided by your HOA?

yes, I am on about a half acre and most of it is fenced tight... the rest is a river (creek, for you asshats who live on the mississippi) and open regional parkland beyond that. good place for a dog, but I do have neighbors, and I am considerate, hence the need for a dog that won't bark constantly...

oh, and no hoa.

Yer a crusty old fxxxer.

you would be crusty too, if you poured hydrogen peroxide on your fxxxing hand three times a day.

My thoughts.

These breeds keep popping up, but none really tickle my fancy...

  • Australian Shepherd - You need to have livestock to keep them busy.
  • Beagle - Great with kids but diggers and they go hunting all by themselves, alot. Will Bark when the stars are not aligned. You have to get two for peace and quite time.
  • Boxer Dogs - Hyper as a Chiwawa after drinking a Red Bull until they are 3 y/o.
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Never heard of them.
  • Cocker Spaniel - Stick like they rolled in a dead critter, even after after a bath.
  • English Bulldog - Boxers are great and very protective of women and kids.
  • Golden Retriever - Great neighborhood Dog. They tend to need a big yard or area to wonder around. Great watch dogs.
  • Labrador - Great dogs but the chew on everything until they are 2 y/o.
  • Norfolk Terrier (AKC link) - Terrier Breeds are great watch dogs and very protective. They are a bit nippy around anybody but their master.
  • Poodle - Standard Poodle fur collects fox tails and everyother weed with a barb on it.
I would love to get a hound of sorts, black and tan coon, or something, but they are just not family dogs, from what I understand...

Any ideas out there?

FYI, there will be no Pits or Canary Fighters considered, so leave it alone.

What is your size preference? I have a Boerboel. He barks once or twice when someone is at the door, and won't let strangers come near me until I tell him it's OK. He isn't aggressive at all toward other dogs or people when I'm out walking him but always seems to be between me and strangers. He is somewhat active, but does fine when he spends a day inside. Doesn't dig or chew, and is very gentle and protective with my niece. Thin fur that doesn't cling to furniture or hold dirt, mud, snow ect. The only problem is he weighs about 180 lbs. FWIW i wouldn't hesitate to leave him around kids.

I can't imagine a better dog for little kids than one of my labs. First qualifier is that they are highly trained as waterfowl retrievers. A big part of that training includes dominance and anti agression training.

So far I have seen them put up with the following from my twins:

Pencil stuck up the blm's butt.
Clf being strangled with a tighteden belt.
Blm being "picked up" by his balls.
Dog pile on both of the dogs at various times.
My daughter wrapping the clf's lips around her nose.
Ears being used as chew toys.
Tails being used to stear the dog.
My daughter eating out of the same bowl as both dogs.

The list of head shakers goes on.

guess he thought his job was done? Maybe to check on/protect mom? He's a momma's dog.

his job was done. this is the way it should be. he see's you as alpha dog. he warned the "pack" of the intruder and stood his ground to ensure nothing happened till you got there to deal with the situation. best way to have a dog. aggressive dogs are often compensating for what they percieve as a "weak" pack leader. the way yours is is much better than having him bite someone he percieves as a threat without enough provocation to justify it.

Yes the standard is too smart. Hard to keep down on the farm once they've seen paree.
