We all know anyone can tell lie’s. What redhead told me was that their steering box would most likely be better than factory due to rapid assembly process and lower standards. They obviously take pride in their specialty. Those recirculating balls dictate how precise the adjustment can be.
I guess the question here is that nothing internal being replaced as a “hard part” is a Toyota part - the Toyota parts are just the reseal kit. Presumably you could spec custom production of the recirculating balls…but how much business are we talking about for a custom manufacturing run of that component for 80 series steering boxes? I’m not saying they don’t - none of us have any way to know - but I am trying to suss out which route I want to take and it’s questionable that a low volume model (80 series Land Cruiser) has a bunch of steering box internals custom made in the aftermarket.

One other thing that doesn’t search well…if you have it ported for hydro, do you have to do it on install or can you leave the ports buttoned up until a later phase of the project? I hate this sh$t, that’s why these projects sit on the shelf for a decade.

Redhead told me I could plug/cap the tapped ports and run it business as usual no problem. Call them, pick their brains, formulate your own opinion.

You can definitely just plug the hydro ports tell your ready. in fact it's a good idea to carry caps or plugs in case you blow a line on the trail then you just cap it off pull the lines and ram refill the fluid and carry on. Ask me how I know 😂

I have to agree with you about the custom internals for a low volume steering box.

Which hard parts did you replace?
So if you put in a new sector shaft new bearing and seals can we call this a rebuild ?

I mean you don't rebuild engines every day but your rebuilding yours, I think we can call it rebuilt when you done and I think it's a lot more sophisticated then a steering box.
I might add that it appears that you doing a great JOB.

I’ve reached out to them. Really it’s the port tapping for a future hydro assist that drives the new 105 box vs. ‘rebuildaseal’. I bought a box with 140K on it in like 2008 as a spare. I’ve bought the 105 sector shaft twice (sold the first one with reseal kit for other non-Cruiser skiing related funds).

I probably don’t care all that much about how the balls are rotating in the sack and it’s not leaking. Which is impressive given what is leaking. But I do need to upgrade the strength and like I don’t even want to have to find a damn box worthy of shipping a steering box somewhere.

Maybe that’s the best place to start, anybody have shipping box links :hillbilly:?

Ship it in a bucket….. balls matter…

Balls matter! I hadn’t thought to ship it in a bucket. I love getting answers to why I have so much inertia about this stuff.

So with the USD v Yen at a four decade high…you can get a brand new 105 box to your door through FedEx for ~$1,150. I could sell my current spare box and 105 sector shaft and probably land within $100 of rebuildaballs after the two-way shipping.

We should start a thread about everything you should buy right now out of Japan. I feel like The Fed owes me this.

Fresh Balls. That’s $1,178 shipped FedEx, paid through PayPal. If anybody wants to send me a bucket and some Franklins I will send you a 140K mile 80 series steering box and 105 sector shaft.

Por Que? Lol
Because of all the mind numbing links about steering boxes on here, I couldnt find any reviews of anyone who actually had tried one. For $355ish to my door, used a coupon code I had that basically covered the shipping, it was at my door in a day. It was a brand new box, and I have had zero issues with it. Still have my old box, that was leaking out of the input shaft. I can reseal, rattle can the top of it red, and put it back in.

Buy it and be done. But what about tapping for hydro assist? I bought my 105 shaft and pitman arm for $270 from Partsouq. Forget how much shipping was but was still a huge savings over any source in the US. All in parts and labor including rebuild, tapping for hydro and a remarkably nice paint job by redhead it was $900 or was it $950. It was under a grand I know for sure.

I also bought the 105 sector and pitman through Partsouq at similar pricing and shouldn’t be difficult to unload the sector shaft and spare box - having a shelf steering box is a bit of unobtanium these days and I can keep one on the shelf and sell one. I’ll get the 105 box tapped once it arrives, imagine I can do that locally in Denver for not much coin.

It’s hard to pass up what is basically a thousand dollar OEM 105 series box purely due to what is likely once or twice in a lifetime exchange rates. I’d just been reading earlier today what high interest rates on the USD are doing to the yen where there is stimulus policy from BoJ butting up against retraction policy in the US. If the dollar is going to be bludgeoning other currencies for awhile that goes into the ‘never waste a crisis’ category.

Partsouq still wants just under $2K for a 105 box shipped and there is plenty of spread to work with at that price, but we’re just not talking much spread at this price point to have a zero mile steering box. PayPal was the only payment option except a wire transfer, and they are good about protecting purchases. Figure for those of us who have been sourcing out of the UAE/Japan for awhile…these bigger items can get to a value point where if you can, you probably should. I started watching PartSouq pricing on a new steering box 3 or 4 years ago when it got down to around $1,700 shipped…and this is $500 less…

Alot of talk about balls in this thread even fresh balls my balls stay fresh and so clean. Anyway I would rather have fresh new balls in a new ball holder.... that doesn't sound right if ya got the $ why not go with brand new ball holder apparatus

Your not going to do it for that price today 😜

In my experience you don’t need the 105 shaft once you go hydro.
But it can’t hurt.

Theoretically, hydro assist would render the 105 sector shaft unnecessary. I did it anyway …. Therefor, if your box isn’t sloppy just have it resealed and ported locally and be over this mountain for a lot less money.

My vote is for new Toyota 105 steering gearbox. I had a RedHead fail on me last summer with less than 3,000 miles on it and I was 1,000+ miles from home. Fortunately, @SNLC had a new 105 box on hand and swapped me. I believe he said he had seen 1 or 2 other new RedHead failures on 80-series.

Define failure.
