Good job.
Next step: drown all the little phillips screws in PB blaster. Then walk away for a few hours.
After things are saturated in penetrant, pick the dirt out of the phillips heads, see if a sharp #2 screwdriver will back them out. If not, grab the screw head w/ small visegrip, and turn the visegrip & screwdriver simultaneously.
Maybe Jim is referring to screws that hold down the fuel sending unit and gas gauge unit on top of the gas tank...
Anyway, how are you planning on cleaning/treating the gas tank?
Hmm...sounds like you need to come up with a plan on how to properly clean and maybe treat that gas tank now that you've got it out.I don't right now.. was just planning on rinsing it out with water and seeing what it looks like. I figured if it wasn't that bad i'd just slap it back on. I don't plan on letting it sit so i'm not too worried about it rusting again.

Just shooting from the hip here, but I would avoid using water to wash out the inside of the gas tank...why not use clean gasoline?
I have read other threads here on MUD about folks taking said gas tanks to a local radiator shop where they have the capability of cleaning/treating tanks like that. Any chance there is a shop like that local to you? What have other MUDers here done/used to clean/treat these tanks...if I recall, @Random Dan just went through this with his tank...might search for info on that thread.
Other thing to consider is whether or not to replace the fuel sending unit with a new one while the tank is out...and those hoses for the tank ventilation vapor separator for sure...make sure they are the proper type fuel line material and size (mm). Bap Geon (a Foreign car aftermarket parts store) carries German fuel hoses (braided) in metric, not SAE...
Water is also not a very good solvent. You need some form of cleaner/degreaser to get rid of gunk, and then if there is rust you need to treat it with acid. A quick google search will reveal lots of options for degreasers, less expensive options include dawn dish soap and laundry detergent.Clean gasoline is kinda expensive... Water is "free"!
Could I just blow out the ventilation pipes with an air compressor?
not sure about a local shop...
what if the tank is just got flecks but the inside is "smooth"?
Fugly...looks like you're in for a new sending unit and gauge...and a good cleaning...okay thanks for all the info guys!
three seconds in on my end and i have so many answers already!
I cant believe this beast ran at all. I'm in awe of how much i drove it with it being this much crap ( theres not too much in the tank... relatively speaking). The sending unit- i think thats the send line(?) has a freaking hole in it!! i could break it off easy.
i wondered why my gauge didn't work.... the thing is so rusted it wont even move
(sorry for picture overload)
The stock screw holding in the sender and pickup plate are little phillips, easily rusted and mangled. Apparently somebody has done this before and upgraded to tiny hex-heads? Either way, that tank really should be discarded. It will continue to shed rust for the rest of it's miserable life.
FWIW, I have super clean, slightly used tank FS (new from toyota a few months ago). It has good pickup & sender in it. IDK how to get it to you, seems too large to UPS.
Lemme get the tank outta the rafters, get some pics in & out, and measure for shipping. That's the only way it's gonna get sold...
