Good job.

Next step: drown all the little phillips screws in PB blaster. Then walk away for a few hours.
After things are saturated in penetrant, pick the dirt out of the phillips heads, see if a sharp #2 screwdriver will back them out. If not, grab the screw head w/ small visegrip, and turn the visegrip & screwdriver simultaneously.

Nice. Congrats! Did you end up cutting off the bolts?

What are these phillips head screws that Jim is referring to holding together? Just curious...I've never dropped the gas tank on a 60 before...but might have to do attend to some rust on the PS rear quarter panel...

Actually I'm not quite sure what phillips heads you are talking about either..

Ha, Ha...well that seems about normal....the only one who knows what is going on is....Jim!!

Maybe Jim is referring to screws that hold down the fuel sending unit and gas gauge unit on top of the gas tank...

Anyway, how are you planning on cleaning/treating the gas tank?

those are bolts for me....

I don't right now.. was just planning on rinsing it out with water and seeing what it looks like. I figured if it wasn't that bad i'd just slap it back on. I don't plan on letting it sit so i'm not too worried about it rusting again.

Hmm...sounds like you need to come up with a plan on how to properly clean and maybe treat that gas tank now that you've got it out.

Just shooting from the hip here, but I would avoid using water to wash out the inside of the gas tank...why not use clean gasoline?

I have read other threads here on MUD about folks taking said gas tanks to a local radiator shop where they have the capability of cleaning/treating tanks like that. Any chance there is a shop like that local to you? What have other MUDers here done/used to clean/treat these tanks...if I recall, @Random Dan just went through this with his tank...might search for info on that thread.

Other thing to consider is whether or not to replace the fuel sending unit with a new one while the tank is out...and those hoses for the tank ventilation vapor separator for sure...make sure they are the proper type fuel line material and size (mm). Bap Geon (a Foreign car aftermarket parts store) carries German fuel hoses (braided) in metric, not SAE...

Clean gasoline is kinda expensive... Water is "free"!

Could I just blow out the ventilation pipes with an air compressor?

not sure about a local shop...

what if the tank is just got flecks but the inside is "smooth"?

Yes, but...

Yes, water is free...but it is also what one tries to keep out of a gas tank...

Not sure I'm the best person to seek advice on this one...just trying to communicate that if you are going to do something to try and clean/treat it, maybe seek additional information (either here on MUD or locally at a professional gas tank repair service, if available, or something that deals with this kind of stuff on a professional basis...to see what they recommend)...

If you do a triple rinse (that's 3x rinse with a small amount...say less than a quart), statistically speaking you have rinsed out anything that can be removed by simple dissolution from the surface into the petrol solution (gasoline solution)...but it's gonna all be in the technique of how well you drain it during each rinse to get all that sediment out...think of how you would 3x rinse a milk carton before throwing it in the kitchen garbage (so it doesn't begin to stink up the kitchen after day 1 sitting in the garbage)...if you've got the swirl down, you can use a minimum amount of water for each rinse and after 3 rinses it's a job well done...if, however, you haven't master the swirl, then you would have to fill it up and empty it three times to get it clean...and use alot more water...

Water is also not a very good solvent. You need some form of cleaner/degreaser to get rid of gunk, and then if there is rust you need to treat it with acid. A quick google search will reveal lots of options for degreasers, less expensive options include dawn dish soap and laundry detergent.

okay thanks for all the info guys!
three seconds in on my end and i have so many answers already!
I cant believe this beast ran at all. I'm in awe of how much i drove it with it being this much crap ( theres not too much in the tank... relatively speaking)

Fugly...looks like you're in for a new sending unit and gauge...and a good cleaning...

The stock screw holding in the sender and pickup plate are little phillips, easily rusted and mangled. Apparently somebody has done this before and upgraded to tiny hex-heads? Either way, that tank really should be discarded. It will continue to shed rust for the rest of it's miserable life.
FWIW, I have super clean, slightly used tank FS (new from toyota a few months ago). It has good pickup & sender in it. IDK how to get it to you, seems too large to UPS.

i think you should be able to ship it UPS, I have gotten some pretty big packages before through them... I'd be willing to get it.

actually, water is the most universal solvent; just not well suited for oils...
