got a whine in my fj40 4 speed gearbox in 3rd and 4th, under moderate accelleration it is really noticable, worst when backing off, and barely noticable when full throttle. can't hear it when coasting.

any ideas what it is. separated it to gearbox, because A i just rebuilt the transfer case because i thought that was it, and B transfer in neutral 3rd and 4th still make the noise.

sounds like a jet engine accellerating.

dad thinks it's just a dry bearing.

any other thoughtS?

Stupid question, but did you check the fluid?

Its a wine and not a rattle. I know a common problem is for the transfer case linkage to rattle. If you touch the shifter knob while its doing this and it goes away, thats the problem. However, thats a rattle and not a jet accleration.

You sure the sound is from your gearbox?

yeah i got the rattle too, but both my cruisers do that, so i knew it was the trans case, fluid check, i know it's stupid but no i don't know yet... before you guys linch me, i just finished rebuilding the Tcase and diff, at 10pm and took it for a test... tomorrow i'm checking fluid. but i guess i'm fishing for a worst case/ best case scenario type thing.

pretty sure it's the trans, it's definately coming from under the floor, not from the engine bay, and even does it when the T-case is in neutral
.

Do you feel any kind of vibration from the rear? Just wondering if it could be a U joint on its last leg. Don't know if it could make a sound like that, just trying to come up with ideas.

When you check your fluid, check the diff's too!

sorry to sound like i'm knocking back suggestions, but as well as my tcase rebuild today, i got my driveshaft balanced and got new uni's, and changed my 3rd member, and filled the Tcase, and diff with oil, and greased the unis... i was tracking down a rear end vibration to start with, but that is gone now.

No need to apologize. Just trying to offer ideas without hearing it personally. I'd be happy to come if you send a ticket! Always wanted to visit Australia!

Hope you solve it!

yeah i know it's hard to know history and the sound that it's makin i just felt a little funny to have to shoot down a couple of suggestions so quickly... damn that ride is smooth now with the new dshaft, diff, and tcase bearings...

The usual culprit is the idler gear bearings in the transfer case, since it is a high wear weak link. Since you replaced them, you can probably rule that out unless you carked the install (dropped a shim or something). That leaves the tranny. Around here, trannys are so cheap that I would just get another one. Another possibility is to just live with it. I doubt that anything bad will happen soon.

Sometimes a whine that picks up in 3rd and 4th and continues in pitch based on vehicle speed, rather than gear is the rear end. I wonder what difference it would make if you disconnected the rear driveshaft all together and tried driving it on front wheel drive, taking all the load off of the rear end?

misses wasn't in the car for the test (didn't want to add too much weight :) ) checked the fluid, a little low, but still heaps in there, topped it up, didn't make a difference. i think i'm going to drive it till it goes bang... might be idler bearings as that;s what everyone seems to say... guess i didn't rebuild them that well :)

strange though, cause exactly the same noise was present before the rebuild...

I have a whine in my transfer case that I think is the idler gear bearings. It only shows up under a load in both ranges at the same rpm's and it seems to be getting a little worse lately, especially at higher speeds (big 50 mph!) What will be the end result if it is not dealt with? Is this impending doom at any moment? or will it run this way for a while? I know I am in for a rebuild and I did one years ago on my old 1970 FJ40 so I know what to do--just don't want to do it right now.

My tranny does the same thing, only it sings even better in low range. Try putting it 4th gear low sounds like Getty Lee, or a 1991 honda accord. Now, reverse is getting hard to get into, and metal flakes are forming rapidly. I had a decent amount of metal come out after maybe 300 miles of driving. On top of that it's a leaker, time to feed this one to the dogs also and throw in the spare.

Well, now the whine is a vibration. Looks like time to rebuild. I have a one piece case with the bigger idler shaft and there is no kit for it so I have to get the parts indvidually. This has been a long time coming but when it got bad it got bad fast. Has anyone pulled the idler gear out without having to first get the larger output gear off the output shaft--thus not pulling it out of the case? Why couldn't they make that hole in the rear of the case big enough to just pull that whole output assembly out in one shot!
