What size intercooler piping (air to air) is recommended for a Gturbo Bad Boy Stage 1 running at 26psi? What about 30psi? Would 2" piping do it? I've heard that the turbo outlet is only 2" anyway - is that right? Just wondering because I asked my installer what piping would be used and he said he wasn't yet sure but probably 2" or 2.5" dpending on the core connectors and new manifold. I thought it should be 3" but that's only because most of the A2A installs I've seen are 3".

Cheers.

If your turbo outlet is 2" it would be better to run 2" piping as you will get more backpressure from abrupt transitions in diameter than you will running slightly smaller tubing. If you do a front mount turbo then you could do a nice transition to 3" or something like that, but there is not enough room with a top mount. Going from a 2 to 3 inch transition can add the equivalent of several feet of piping if it is over 7 degrees, which is extremely gradual for a transition. 7 degrees is the max transition for a trumpet (smaller diameter to larger) to avoid disruption of the air flow (boundry layer). You can be a little more abrupt going the other way.

... there is not enough room with a top mount

Thanks Gerg.

It's A2A and I've been told the core is 600 x 300 x 90. With that sort of size I've only even seen 3" inlets/outlets but who knows. Perhaps I should stop worrying about all these details and leave it to the experts!

This is a bit over due. Just came back from tuning and a very fun run.

1HZ with a Grunter boosting 14.5psi no intercooler as of yet.

Thoughts so far. Holy **** it is a a completely different truck. It pulls like a freight train and I am all smiles, this was exactly what I was hoping for.

Smooth acceleration and power throughout the rpm band, its very drivable. There is a good sized hill that I have always driven at 80km/hr and been pretty light on the pedal just to go easy on the engine. I can now mat my foot to the floor and it will accelerate HARD up the hill from 80kms/h all the way to 110 at the top and about 1000deg F on the pyro (pre turbo).

It definately feels quicker than my HDJ81, how much quicker I don't know.
I think it would beat it for sure, pulls WAY harder.

I still have to turn up the fuel some more as my max egt is 1100F but i lost my little socket while tuning on the side of the highway.

Boost gauge will start to move at ~1200 rpm. and I can get it to full boost (14.5lbs) at 1600 rpm if I drive it like an ass hat. Usual driving 10-12psi at that rpm with some load and full boost at roughly 1800-2000 rpm with usual driving habits.

The ceramic coating I think is helping too with cool down time. After a hard run around it will drop to 300 deg in seconds, I am shocked as my old hdj81 took way more time than that from what I remember. I am really happy I did this so far.

Intercooler will be the next and potentially the last performance engine mod I have in store for her. Should drop off the EGTs a bit more and have the ability to turn up the fuel some more. My final goal is to have ~150rwhp on skinny 33s, this should be possible with my fuel pump in my eyes as the 10mm pump on the pre 99 1hz engines max out at this range or a little above.

Graeme this turbo kicks ass, I want another one for my 75 at some point, maybe a little bit higher spec one
Anyone wanting to fit one to a 1HZ this is the turbo to do in my eyes, as I said it is a COMPLETELY different truck now.

Has there been a turbo made for any of the 4BD1T's gbentink?

One of the Aussies fitted a Gturbo to his 4BD1, he had some initial problems and I never heard back after he got them sorted.
I can only assume it's working nicely.

He did have a clearance problem fitting it under the bonnet. But this was high mount and in a landrover.

Thanks, I did a bit of searching and could not find anything. Would be interesting to see if something would work.

Gturbo on youtube - Some low rpm boost on 1HDT

Finally going to start posting video on youtube.

Did this a few weeks ago. It is 20psi at 1600rpm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCTKZh43rPg

There is another video there showing at 1400rpm with 15psi, rising to ~20psi at 1450-1500rpm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiFQ3AE_TMs

Im in 3rd I think for the 1600rpm run and 4th for the 1400rpm run - on the brake in both to hold revs

I just loaded another video - casual driving through all 5 gears to show boost response without stomping on the throttle and changing gears at ~ 2000rpm. Its vid of a 1HDFT I did a few days later with similar results (top mount Plazma man) water to air IC however I can't prove the rpm since the 1HDFT was fitted to a std spec 80 and doesn't even have a tacho. Does 20psi at indicated 55-60km/h in 5th. At end of the id Im in 5th and press the throttle at ~ 60km/h and easily does 20psi (a little lazy due to low revs).

Same as my wagon, exept my FT came out of an auto from japan. Off topic I know but is there any way to set up a tacho on this motor? Not really needed but would be handy as a reference point, my seat of the pants gauge tells me the new bad boy 2 is making way more power than i was expecting at lower revs, well all revs really, very nice work G.

Have limited boost until 4 inch snorkel is installed and better intercooling, but the thing jumps on top of sand now (course riverbed sand) and just hammers along.

Definately wont be going any bigger than the grunter model for my 1hdt ute though, as the power these turbos deliver down low has changed my focus on power delivery completely, bottom end stomp is where its at.

Yes, I will be offering a "Trade In" service on all and any Gturbo to allow customers to upgrade to the newest model at a big discount.

Just wait a few months and Ill offer it :)

did you take trade in . .. ? :frown:

Kool. I am still waiting on feedback for the BB2; quite a few getting installed at the moment but not power results yet. On my FTE, it does 20psi pretty early (1700), but breaths so well at 2500-3500

that's what I want to read .. ( ear ! )

I would need to start working in better intake ..
