Is this typical for a stock "mall cruiser" 2002 LX470 ... I average mostly around 13 to 14 MPG typically when I drive some stop and go driving mostly below 45mph. When on a long trip on the Interstate Highway I get mostly 15 to almost 16 MPG.

Wondering if replacing the upstream O2 sensors would help. My LX470 has only 77K miles on it.
 
Do you have an OBD tool that has AF (upstream) and O2 (downstream) voltage readout? That’s where I would start to see if they are faulty, reading between the two side/bank should be close by decimal.
 
Those are GREAT numbers! 15 to 16 highway and 12-14 in the city are fantastic for this old V8's with 4 speeds that is 100% All-Wheel-Drive.
 
I just installed the scan gauge 2 unit on my 2000 LC and it give me real time MPG readings. Averaged 15-17 non-stop start when driving but the MPG went down to 2-8 when accelerating hard or going uphill.

Pretty cool device that plugs into the ob11 port if you 100 series doesnt have computer in dash that gives that info.
 
My '99 has 345K and gets 13-14 in town - often 14.6. I have gotten 18+ on two highway trips that were in rural Colorado, so not super high speed driving. I get 17 on the highway a higher speeds.

I'm very happy with the mileage I get on this fat pig of a truck, versus that of my FJ62 (12 mpg most of the time), and EFI FJ40 (10 mpg all the time).
 
My 98 four speed consistently gets 19+ on the highway - never gotten 20 try as I might. I don't think I've ever had a tank of city only driving. 1998s are pretty lightweight by comparison to later years and my 98 is especially svelte. On the EPA test the 2003 five speed added 1 mpg to the 2002 highway number, no change to the city number.

what makes the 98 lighter than other 100 series ? it surely can't just be the front diff ?
 
'98 UZJ100 4 speed and it gets the same fuel mileage as cwmoser. I used to have an '06 GX470, which got much better mileage and also felt like it had a lot more power than the UZJ (some sites claim JDM models only got 232 HP, others say 260 HP).

VVT-i and non VVT-i. (supposedly)
A JDM and AUS engine both made around 230. (232 for JDM and 228 for AUS, well within the error area of a dyno.)
Both were non VVT-i.
 
Sounds about right to me. I have an 05 with 33's, sliders and an ARB bumper. Getting 9-12mpg in town and 13-16mpg on the highway (my wife is 9/13 and im 12/16 lol) but I remamber the numbers being pretty close to what you posted when it was stock.

Check tire pressure, if low this can make a big difference. I would do basic tune up items as well (air filter, spark plugs, O2 sensor)

Just lots of little stuff probably, about 200 pounds from 1998 to 2007. The 4 pinion front diff added only 12 oz. by my calculations but the addition of the A-trac weight is what causes 4 pinion diffs to fail at an alarming rate.:)
