I hope your "Newcastle" is the Australian one!

Diesel 40-series cruisers have their roots in this part of the world! :D

but of course and if we keep bloody floggin them off we wont have any left, the only consolation is they are going to better homes rather than rusting away in a paddock.:)
And just so that I am not hijacking ur thread if you need help to find parts gary drop us a line and ill take a look around down here.

Hey Toms42, I hear you about them going offshore - I missed out on a couple of beauties to overseas buyers - but at least they go to appreciating owners  who don't chop them up to be "beach buggies"! I plan to keep mine here though. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it.

Theo - dankie - al jou harde werk aan Ugly Betty het my sommer moeg laat voel net om deur die fotos to kyk  Ek het nog 'n lang pad voor.

I'm going to start collecting the rubbers and bushings before they all run out - I understand the eBay gear is dubious quality - so if anyone has suggestions or recommendations I'd be pleased to get any advice? Does Toyota sell them as a package or do I need to list individual part numbers?

I have the original owners manual - have not found a soft copy here or anywhere else - is it useful to anyone if I scan it and post it up?

BAAS- Keep us posted on how it goes.

RED47-A/C from the heater box? I never knew such a thing existed in a 40 series. Got any pics of this type unit? The reproduction system I have is on the passenger side only and uses R134. With the petrol 2F engine only 1" from the firewall on the drivers side, my feet are always hot since the a/c doesn't duct any cool air to the drivers side.

Yea mate from what I understand its the original out of factory japanese version, the air vents that most of the aussie trucks have is a system that was adapted to them once the rigs hit our shores!! I have only ever seen 1 in my life so far...and its in my mates shorty, he himself has only ever seen another 2 not including his. I had a pic of his interior but i cant seem to find it, but it works by blowing air through the heater box (obviously not when the heater is on) im pretty sure its operated by the same control unit as the aussie version...they're about as rare as hens teeth mate

well u live and learn. I have only seen the dealer instaled ones after they hit oz. have had 2 now might have something to do with the vehicles comming from NT the one in the ute worked a treat and the shorty was good as well but it needed a regass so it probably could have been better both types i have owned were passenger side no air thru heater box u would want to ensure your heater tap worked tho, I had to divert my heater hose in my bj42 on a long drive from Townsville to Newcastle because my left leg started to cook.

 Sounds like the one that my truck came with  I thought mine was an aftermarket version as it was not like Gary's. It only blew the air through the vents ontop of the heater box, located in the centre. Maybe I should refit it afterall :hhmm: :meh:

Oh hell yeah. That would be awesome baas. Your 42 is obviously closer to my BJ40 than an FJ40 is and good factory info is hard to find, so please, post away.

I have a fsm for bj42 and owners manual if u need anything particular i can photocopy for u. Keep your eyes open on ebay as there are usualy 1 or 2 FSM on there or a cd with them scanned onto it for cheap.

Toyotaman - No, unfortunately it is an aftermarket radio - if anyone knows of an original radio I'd be keen to hear from them.

Red47 - it is the Aussie style a/c fitted to the passenger side.

Interior pic below FYI - needs a helluva good clean up:

Gary,

I always though that the one you have is the original factory item. I have seen one of the other types at the wreckers, might have to go pick it up.

[...]I did find the holy grail about a year back but the current (and first) owner still sings her to sleep in the garage each night and is not selling - and it's taken me this long to find something similar - :princess: says it is more like an obsession. [...]

I'm really chuffed with her - the PO struggled to say goodbye - [...]

Hello Baas,

Congratulations. She's a nice lady.

It is always good to see a Cruiser going to a caring home. In your case, though, she went from one caring home to another. A moving of sorts, and I think the previous owner should find relief in that fact...

I am always amazed by the way a Cruiser becomes so important for his/her owner, eventually ending up as part of the family. Even if it is a family of one. This is what makes this community so fascinating.

Hey Gary,

Nice score on the bj42! :P I hope you paid less than 10k for it although I wouldn't be surprised if you paid more for such a straight model like that.

Well done and get driving. :) Where abouts in brisbane are you? I'm on the northside.

Thanks Juan - she's my first TLC and I can tell that she is a keeper, picked her up and been driving her everyday since. Our dog really likes her too, he reckons that every time I go for the keys that we're going on an adventure.

Brisvegan - thanks mate. I am on the northside too - 4035 - so I reckon a stone's throw from you if you're with qld4wd? I'm changing oil and filters this weekend but being new to diesels I reckon it'd be wise to get her checked.

Just a little update

Well, had the old girl for 6 weeks or so and driven almost everyday. Went away on business for two weeks and when I came back the first thing I did was check on my truck, much to my family's disgust  But the little people that live in my house want to drive in her all the time, they reckon it's a happy car.

I am having some strange behaviour with the sedimenter light and oil pressure all over the place. Replaced the battery - the old one was leaking.

But now time to replace the interior rear carpet and the front rubber mats with carpet - think I'll get some custom made in the same colour as the original. And whilst I am at it, I'll clean up the inside of the truck and add some sound deadening material to the carpet and behind the interior panels (gotta love the LX).

Questions:
Any suggestions on good quality carpets from any of the mud vendors? And what sort of material would you recommend for the sound deadening behind the panels?

Anyways, here are some pics of the back - don't think the top has ever been off this girl and about 26 years of outback dust. I'll post some updates when the carpets are done. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Theo - I had the regulator tested by two shops - one said it was buggered and the other said it was fine :bang: But I'll get a new one - looking at the schematics for the wiring it seems there is more than just the sedimenter that goes to the sedimenter light, and the battery leak is probably another sign that the regulator is buggered - I have much to learn :o thank goodness for mud

Well my woes about the weird sedimenter light behaviour continues. I replaced the voltage regulator today but still having the same hassles. Sedimenter (filter) light is on at low revs and my oil pressure gauge rises with increased revs. Bugger! Any other ideas before I take her to the auto electrician?

Other than that - the last couple of weeks saw me replace the brake master cyliner, bleed the brake system and order new bleed nipples from Toyota. Buffed the fibre-glass roof - she came up quite nicely - so really pleased with that. I read a recent post about the noise from the wiper gear control box when set on intermittent - reckon I'll get onto that when I unstick my odometer :wrench:

Just amazed at how much time these little beasts can take up  But she gets driven almost everyday  And just love this forum

Very nice, I should've waited for a good LX instead of getting my rustbucket BJ 42, but anyway. Does your vehicle still have the A/C install sticker on the firewall, it should say which dealership installed it? The A/C in my 42 was installed at Essendon in 1986. As for the factory air, it's rare, my '84 HJ 47 troopy has it, the combination fan switch/thermostat control looks exactly the same as that in a new VDJ 76/78/79.
