The mental picture of someone wearing an IPOR sweatshirt wrenching on your rig on the deck of an open trailer at 70mph makes me LOL... :lol:

Any fundemental "modifications" wich need to be adressed prior to Moab Exploration or just little things like figuring out where to mount the Hula Girl on the dash???

Inquisitive minds want to know...;p

Here's a couple more pics from before I put the fan through the radiator... :crybaby: who knew the stock 80 fan would flex so much! Under load it flexed 3/4" and hit the core right at the tank, destroyed the radiator right at the epoxy - does not appear to be repairable. :censor:

I need a smaller or shorter or stiffer fan for this truck - suggestions?

Duh, btdt. Really cool build and well executed guys. You can run the ringed fan from the SC setup. Not sure what the application is, but Cdan knows. Are you running the stock 80 radiator? If so I put plate on mine at the bottom so that it would actually deflect off the radiator if it flexed forward. You can also trim the tips of the blades on the 80 fan and you will gain about 3/4"

Thanks. I feel really smart (not) :princess: for not anticipating this problem. Evidently it's fairly common in SC 80s. (it's all over the 80 forum - I need to spend more time reading the forums!) I did notice that the fan that comes with the SC kit has a ring on it like the 3VZE had. I thought I read where people have had problems with this fan breaking up... not sure if that's real or just hearsay.

I'm running a custom built cross flow aluminum radiator from Griffin with the trans cooler on the driver side. IIRC it's 24" x 20" with two 1.25" cores. It's bigger than I really need, but i wanted to make sure I didn't have any cooling problems given the tighter engine compartment. (I didn't... er, until the fan chewed a big hole in about 6 tubes right at the tank) I don't think I can get a replacement here in time for the Moab trip (less than two weeks away) so I filled it with JB weld this morning. Hopefully it will work well enough to get me through the trip and I can replace the radiator afterwards.

Cam suggested running the 3FE fan. It's slightly smaller in diameter, slightly thinner (front to back) and the fan clutch is shorter too. He's pulling one for me right now, we should know if it will work in a few minutes.
 
man that sucks!!! I was going to post something when I saw your pics before about the fan being too close to the radiator but I figured you knew a ton more than me and that it might have been an optical illusion from the pic. Now I wish I had!! Another option is the fan from the v6 that Cdan replaces for the ring fan for people running Superchargers. The Ring fan is VERY inefficient and SC cruisers in warm climates have a lot of problems with overheating with them. The V6 fan is smaller and as far as I know no one has had problems with them but the increase cooling over the ring fan.

Honestly, I've never seen a plastic fan flex that much spinning through air (not water). From the front edge of the fan to where it hit the radiator it's approx 1". I've never seen a plastic fan flex that much - we do a lot of mechanical fans with custom radiators on v8 swaps and so on and I've pulled tighter clearances with no problems. I think the stock 80 fan is just junk. The 3FE fan (appears to be the same as the 2F fan) is much sturdier. It is slightly smaller in diameter too - which in this case I don't think will present a problem. The radiator I have is very big, aluminum and cross-flow in design. I'm also running a shroud. Hopefully this 3FE fan blade will hold up and keep off the radiator. EDIT 9-6-10: It does.

Griffin can't make me another one for two weeks - too late for this truck to make the Moab trip.

My JB Kwik Weld repair (shown above) did not work. I'm not giving up just yet... I read somewhere on the internet (so it must be true) that you can thin JB weld with denatured alcohol, tape the bottom of the radiator, then fill up the core with the JB Weld solution.

So...

I now own all of the JB Weld in the greater Fredericksburg Area. About $150 worth to be exact. I have filled the core with said solution and should know if it will hold pressure sometime in the next 24 hours.
 
Too late now...but why not have it welded up? All aluminum, right?

I wish it were that easy, I can do that myself. It's damaged at the tank - and in this particular radiator the cores are epoxy'd to the tanks rather than welded. I'm afraid that if I try to weld the tubes shut right where the tank is glued on the epoxy will begin to leak. I've read that with the damage where it is in this radiator it is non-repairable... of course that hasn't stopped me from trying! I think an epoxy fix is the best way given the circumstances, I just hope my gallon of JB Weld is cured by morning!

I have a "back up" radiator coming later this week... it's not the right radiator, but I think I can make it fit well enough for the trip... and it was in stock at summitracing.com...
 
How about the high heat epoxy that people use on exhaust manifolds that crack. It never worked for m, but it's more flexible than that JB weld
 
Was Cam driving when this happened? I know his right foot weighs more than his left so I am just trying to see if that was a contributing factor... :p

Brother, I feel for you. Nothing like a setback like this on a tight schedule to get the WTF Does it take !!! flowing.

Knowing you guys, I am sure you will sort out some kind of Swine Magic and get this Hic-up over-engineered in no time.

Throw a couple of raw eggs into the radiator. It will block the holes :D
