Absolutely awesome project! What auto shifter did you use? What I can see doesn't look like an 80....

Actually it is an 80 shifter, but slightly modified. I leveled out the mounting stance because in the 80 it's mounted to an incline but in my 40 it will be mounted flat on the transmission tunnel. It also probably looks different because of the shifter cover (not sure if I have posted pics) and the location of the parking brake - both are unique to the fzj40.

I worked on wiring the front clip today. Very tedious work. Had to convert the 4 headlamp system to 2, and convert it from a switched ground to a switched hot. I used a normally closed relay to switch hots based on the ground signal for the hi-beams. I left the other hot for auxiliary lighting, if I decide to add any later.

I also modified the park lamps in the '69 clip to be park/turn signals so I wouldn't need any turn signals on the fender. I did the same with the marker lights in the aprons. This wasn't necessary for the 80/40 conversion, only for the cool factor. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow.

Some pics of wiring the front clip - headlights and the signals. Unfortunately I took pics of the wiring in progress but forgot to take pics of it after taping and looming...

You can see in the second pic of the bib lights that Toyota builds them for 1157 bulbs, but only wires the running lamp. We fished a wire up into the lamp and soldered it in place so we could use the other filament for the turn signal.

First two pics show the side markers (early FJ40's have them in the aprons) into which I welded in 1157 sockets in place of the 1156's. This was trickier than it sounds - the placement needs to be precise. Too deep and you can't screw the 1157 in, too shallow and the bulb doesn't fit inside the housing. Regardless, I'll need to run LED's here because the bulb is so close to the lens that an incandescent would burn too hot and melt the lens. The gray color is RTV. I stitched the sockets in and sealed with RTV to preserve the zinc plating.

Next pic is the relay that controls the headlamp operation. Not sure why I took this pic, but there you have it...

Here's a picture of the marine 12v receptacle Kenny set up for me. Initially Cam had built me a trick housing for two receptacles, but I couldn't think of what I would need two for, and I wanted to have it further recessed into the corner in order to protect the 12v adapter plug.

Kenny also brought his 45 qt Engel fridge for us to use on our Moab trip. It fits perfectly behind the rear seat. I need to find some super-pimp recessed tie downs to put back there. Any suggestions?

WOW very nice

Sadly, I had a major setback yesterday. I was looking for a wire in a plug that we had stripped from the harness. I found the plug, with the wires pulled aside - clearly we knew they needed to be kept - but somehow they were pulled. After mistakenly chasing a similar wire through the whole harness I realized that the pin had actually been pulled from the plug. Fortunately I had saved all of the wires, even those pulled from the plugs. I was able to re-insert the wire into the plug to provide the circuit I was looking for... but not until after much lost time...:whoops:

Today was a snow day in Central VA...

...so I took the kids sledding. Fortunately for me my crack (smokin?) staff is still on duty and has agreed to help me with a couple objectives - wiring the air lockers, reassembling the dash that I destroyed looking for the orange wire, and running brake lines. Vince works magic with brake line bending, so I'm actually fortunate that I was able to leave him to his task today. (without the boss man interfering with his work!)

I'm off to HeadCase's house to test his sledding hill...

S.O.P.

It's alive!

(but not until after a $300 fuel pump replacement. :bang:)

Motor runs, and sounds good. Should have some pics outside tomorrow...

Lance

I seem to recall that a 7' Burnout is Standard Operating Proceedure for most IPOR builds. Will this be part of your update tomorrow??? :p

Ok it is tommorrow, We need pics, too many days without them!

Sounded to me more like the theme to Jaws.. Da dum, Da dum Da dum...

Lance,

This is lookin' good! I can't wait to see this rig in action.

What else is on the "Get it Done" list?

Ben

the test track is calling . I have a good rock with your name on it.

I am not busy sunday !!!!

What else is on the "Get it Done" list?

Wash Ben's truck. Clean out Ben's truck. Polish the tires on Ben's truck...

oh, you mean on mine? A lot... More than I can list for you here. But, hey, we have 32 hours of driving before we get there... I'll have Kenny working on the FZJ on the trailer during our trip out...

I'll bring the bubble wrap. It sounded really sweet in the shop Thursday - deep throaty rumble. Just idling it sounds like it means bitness! Looks even better in its natural envronment. The attention to detail is overwhelming and Lance isn't even done yet! BOOWAHAHA...

LOL. I took it out to a VA state inspection center today to get a sticker on it and the shop wouldn't let me pay for it. Instead the guy says, "don't worry about the bill, just climb the wall out there on your way out."

Intrigued I ask, "Where is this wall you speak of?" He points to the wall of the building that we're in, and all of the guys who work there start snickering... Cam, who is riding shotgun, just smiles. That's it, just smiles... and locks the diffs.

Amidst wisecracks about approach angles, and pretty paint job we did just that - drove up the wall. Just drove up to it, turned a tire into the wall of the building, and drove right up the wall - in super slo-mo.

I may have cracked a grin at that point...

Sweet Rig Lance. If I can't make it to moab I might have to camp out on the side of I70 to see you pass by ;)
