I'm getting low-mid 40's with my VW TDI. I can't bring myself to monitor the cruiser. Don't the tire sizes impact the odo readings?

I just got my new to me 97 lx, stock everything, with the stock michelin ltx's (went from 28psi when I bought it up to 34psi for my second trip). Ran down to florida from NC, averaged 16-18 on the hwy. We were loaded pretty full, wife, kid, all the stuff that goes along with 2 weeks in fl.......came back loaded even fuller, and got about the same. This was drivin 75-85 as often as possible (weather and traffic were a beeeeoch).

Drove from Greensboro, NC to Fayetteville, NC by way of raleigh (all interstate), then back to Greensboro. Lightly loaded (my suitcase, laptop bag, and two action packers with tools, extraction gear, etc). Drivin at 65-72 the whole way, AC on (95 degrees), and averaged over 21mpg........yeah, 21 mpg...I had 268 miles on the trip odometer when the needle hit halfway. I found that my MPG increased significantly if i drove around the speedlimit, and acted like i had an egg between my foot and the pedals. That was on 87 octane costco gasoline (2.29 a gallon now seems like a freakin bargain......). Oh yeah, when everyone is passing you, you get to see alot more of what goes on in the car beside you ;) You can also tuck in behind a semi and draft. Noticed anywhere from 200-400 RPM less at 70 mph when drafting....

I'll be feeding it mobil 1 5-30 this weekend, and hope to get a lil more increase as other fluids get baselined. I havent noticed any significant decrease in mileage on the hwy with the ac on vs off. In town, mileage just sucks.........

Dude! 21mpg? Are you sure you didn't have the calculator upside down and it's actually 12?

Do you think bumping to 34 psi helped that much? How many miles are on your LX?

Some stats on my first fillup:- (turbo diesel, and living in UK)

390 miles travelled
64.6 litres consumed (that's 17 US gal, or 14 UK gal)
=23mpg
Tank capacity = 90 litres

Type of drving included 200miles driving in London (ie, lots of bumper to bumper) plus 190 miles motorway @ 60-70mph. Driven conservatively.

Price of unleaded 95 octane =92p per litre or USD6.00 per gallon.
Price of diesel = 94p per litre (hence the reason for driving conservatively !!)

Owners manual says 25mpg @ steady 56mph, or 18mpg @ 75mph (mpg are converted to US).

Yeah, 21mpg. A little under 18 gallons used in 383 miles travelled. its a 97 lx with 72k on it. New EGR stuff went on when I bought it ag 68k. Tire pressure may not have helped out much, but it did track a little straighter when I evened em all out (had 4 diff tire pressures on 4 diff tires.....)

I see smoke (or that you haven't taken Statistic...)

21 mpg seems a tad bit high...

I managed 20 mpg on one tank on the way back from Moab a couple of years ago and I was running on 35" MTRs. Of course, I was only driving 65 and had a 20 mph tailwind.

Normally, its closer to 15

I get about 11.5-12 around town with a lot of less than 5 mile trips, and 15-16 on highway trips. You have to love California Oxy gas. With my pathfinder, I would get 15mpg, period. I fill up in Oregon and it is 18mpg!!!

I'm not bs'n. Flatland and drivin like a puss. I have less than 50 lbs of crap in the back and its bone stock. On downhills I put it in neutral and coast (some of the hills on 421 are coastable at 55-65 and not scruffin off speed).

I go from feast to famine on gas and mileage. I've had as low as 11-13 (drivin around town heavyfootin it). That was when gas was a measly 1.92 a gallon............ I either drive 10 miles round trip to my office a day, or 200 back and forth to a remote site.

Maybe I didnt top off as much as I did the previous fillup. That could account for as many as 2 gallons, which would skew readings.

I was consistently able to get 26-28 out of my 4wd tacoma xcab v6 due to drivin like a puss most of the time. (and hiway miles).

I have gotten over 17 mpg several times with multiple fillups on the highway and 19mpg once. The main thing I have seen is keeping the speed down, under 70mph, better around 55mph, but typically doing around 65mph) and as others have said, driving like you have an egg under your foot. It is hard to do, at least for me, but you can see the difference at the pump.

I don't have a roof rack, which can help a bit.

I'm smelling something stinky, check your shoes. Is what you are saying you have experienced as high 21mpg or you are getting 21mpg.

Corrected for the tires I just got 14.6. mpg. A back and forth to work, mostly highway with a little city on each end. Running 65-70 MPH corrected. (60-65 indicated)
without correcting for the 315's: 13.22 mpg / 284 miles to the tank.
with the correction: 14.6 mpg / 314 mile to the tank.

Stock engine, stock gears, OME, 315's and ARB bull and side bars to screw up the aerodynamics.

My Cruiser is stock all the way, and I got 18 mpg on a long road trip. No intown driving though. Drove about 70 all the way. I think when I change my tires out I can get maybe 19 on the road.

I had 21mpg on my last road trip around the flat part of nc. Ive consistently averaged 17 or so, but its cause i do very little in town driving (my drive to work is 5 miles with 3 stoplights)..... I've had as little as 14 when it was a tank all around town driving. Sweet spot for my lx is between 60-70. Above that it sux gas, below it, well, thast just too slow LOL.
