Is anybody making a repro gas tank for a pig? The only one I could find was the long range one from MAF, I'm not crazy about it because you have to move the spare tire.

Nobody makes a repro and as far as I know MAF/SOR no longer make there extra range version.

I had a local fab shop make me a "long range" tank for MUCH cheaper than the price of the SOR/MAF versions.

A competent shop could make you a stock replacement but don't expect it to come cheap. The sparetire bracket forces a hump in the stock tank and thus more work to create.
Thank's John and Ryan, I didn't realize about the hump. I'll have someone fab me up one when I get to that point.

What is wrong with the tank that came with yours?
I'm not sure Pablo, I've had several fj40's with rusted out tanks, from the looks of the sides and underneath and being that it's the original tank of 35 years or so I'm guessing it's probably gonna have to be replaced.

I'd inspect it for sure. the tank in my 74 and 75 have no issues at all. And I'm not concerned about them at all. the 74 is just a parts pig anyway though. But like pablo said if its iffy at all have it cleaned then you're ready to go with no worries.

When I start to dissassemble the piggy I'll check it out and see how bad it is. It's kind of hard to see it real well where I have it but when I was underneath I did smell gas.

I had my tank gone through and it was still an issue. Killed two external fuel pumps:crybaby: With the price of those two pumps plus the price I paid to have it lined/cleaned, I would have almost paid for my custom tank:eek::eek:

Did you pre-filter your pump?

I had my stock tank cleaned/repainted at a local radiator shop while doing the body swap and 4,000 miles later have had absolutely no problems. No pre filter, no need (yet) to change out the filter ahead of my SBC fuel pump, no operational problems. They also fixed a slight crack around the sending unit, something they said is pretty common on many tanks. The whole job was $50.
