Hi all,

Does anybody have first hand knowledge of the fuel economy figures of a 4.2L carby FJ40?

Please note that Im chasing info on the Australian leaded petrol model.

Thanks, :p

Bad to pretty bad

I've gotten as good as 19mpg, as bad as 3mpgs. Average 13 mpgs.

Describing the aerodynamics of a 40 in terms of a brick is actually favoring the brick...

Thanks guys,

lets hope its closer to 19mpg.

I have a HJ47 so i know about bad aerodynamics.

Thanks again. :p

Thanks guys,

The old 2F engine is only going to last till I get it home, about a 3200k trip home.

After a little while im going to sub in a 3.6L commodore ecotec. with the T400 4 sp auto.

I never got more than 17 mpg with my 2h. With my 2f/h55 I've gotten 16.5 mpg on the freeway being careful and keeping her at 60 mph. However I normally drive her 75 mph and I consistently get 12.5 mpg. They are thirsty but petrol is cheap so well worth the cost to drive such a cool rig everyday.

May be tricky getting the commodore lump compliance plated but should be a great setup for Australia because it's low altitude and mostly flat. If you can keep your foot out of it you should be able to 16 or 17 mpg I'd think.

The compliance plate isnt too hard, just need to talk to an engineer,

where I live aint flat! but economy with the ecotec should be heaps better then the 2F just less low down torque although the auto should compensate a little!

I've been all over Australia in my seven years living there and other than a few hilly spots in Tassie, Victoria and nsw, it's all pretty flat and low. Where do you live? I live at 7,400' and regularly drive above 11,000' (Kosciusko is 7,310', by comparison) and I know I'd get bad fuel economy with the commodore here as I'd have to cane it everywhere to get it to move a 40. I had a Vortec 350/h55/3:70 in my troopy here and I could get high teens if I was gentle...mind you, I could stir up dust with the fuel gauge if I was in a hurry.

Depending on what sort of altitude you're regularly traversing, you may find you'll get better fuel economy with a V8-of course, the higher Rego costs may render higher fuel economy moot.

You do raise a couple of good points there, when I think of mountains they are only about 4,000f. :)

As for the commodore V6 I happen to have one of my kids old cars in the back yard with a smashed rear end, and there are adapter kits available for less then $500 now so I cant see how I could go without!

Well, if you have the lump sitting in the garden then you can buy a lot of petrol for the cost of a Holden vortec V8, so I'd say it's a perfect choice :-) also, having the donor makes a transplant heaps easier.

Start a thread when she goes under the wrench, I'd love to follow it.
