I need to replace my front axle seals on my 82, any links? how long will this take?
thnx:grinpimp:

how long will it take me, or how long will it take you? :flipoff2:

full banana scale job. easy, though. really messy.

expect to get one side done in a day. once you learn, you can do the other side in half a day.

your axle seals could have failed due to a bent axle tube

axle

How does one bend an axle tube. :hhmm: I believe mine are leaking due to sitting, they are leaking at the ball joint.... any links:meh:

ball joint? there is no ball joint.

Buy the marlin seals. More info here: New Product - Marlin Crawler Heavy Duty Front Inner Axle Seals

You probably wont have the proper SST for putting your knuckles back together, thus the knuckle won't be perfectly centered, and the marlin seals will help keep the axle from leaking.

Here is a good link for how to rebuild your axle: Toyota Front Axle Rebuild

If you don't want to tear down the wheel bearings, you can do it another way, by pulling the entire knuckle as a 1 piece assembly.

Pull the locking hub dial
Remove the snap ring at the end of the axle shaft
Remove the bolts from the felt seals on the back of the knuckle
Remove the brake caliper, including removing the brake line
Unbolt the steering arm. remove the cone washers
Remove the steering arm.
Next pick the knuckle up, and slide the top of the knuckle towards you, and it will come off as a assembly.

Pull the axle shafts out, and you will see the axle seals in the axle housing.

Reassemble, bleed the brakes, and go on down the road.

my thought on that seal is its a better design, but dont assume it is made to hold the fluid in because your axle is bent or you didnt properly shim your trunion bearings.

x2 on the Marlin seals.

If your knuckles are perfectly centered now, and you reuse the shims that you remove in the exact places that they came from, then your knuckles will be perfectly centered when you are finished without using the SST. So mark them somehow (e.g. Driver's top, Driver's bottom, etc.) and put them back where they came from (and ignore the new ones that come in the kit unless you find that one of the old ones is damaged). These shims should be a non-wear item.

I'm on axle housing #3, and steering knuckle #1 and #4 (so a total of 2 ruined housings, and 2 broken knuckles). The last 2 rebuilds was nothing more than a good guess on shims and a quick pull with a cheap fish scale. No SST, never checked to see if its centered. With the marlin seals, it doesn't leak. With the stock seals, it weeped.

How many miles do you have on your marlin seals? I had 10k miles and 2 years on my last knuckle job, and was pretty disappointed in the longevity. I just put the marlins in a couple months ago, and am wondering how many miles i can expect with the HD seals, especially since this truck is now a daily driver and will put closer to 10-15k miles on each year...

thanks all for chimin-in.
This truck has not been hammered I doubt the axle is bent. it has seen lots of desert and set quite some time it only has 165k. marlin seem the way to go.
ball joint is the thing that looks like a ball at the end of the axles sorry if I said it wrong. it is a straight axle truck (82)
once again thanks much
