Wow- glad you're OK Woody.

What exactly has to fail for something like this to happen? What would cause the rotor to seperate like that?

parts that are 'guaranteed' bad:

spindle
rotor
pads
birfield
and, obviously, bearings/seals

really, the balance is all appears fine, and will be saved away for trail repair parts...

You really need to pitch the brake caliper on that side. You will have to rebuild it anyway and there is a possibility of warpage from the heat and the flames and friction during that failure. At least get a loaded reman from Toyota. They are not expensive compared to all the other stuff you need to replace.

That looks like it'll buff out.

Quality carnage!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto on the sentiment that no-one was hurt.

Very Impressive indeed !!! glad you made it to a stop upright and safe and have a good network of folks to pull from to get you back on the road in time.

*fj40z*.................arent you glad we tightened yours up this week :D

glad you're OK!

so, what are you saying happened here exactly?
something seized, shaft froze, and the rotating wheel twisted the shaft end off? or did it snap from the wheel going places? Does look like there was a worn groove on there, likely before it sheared?

Been there...90 heep wrangler, hub broke coming down a cuved hill at 50 mph in Atlanta. Front right tire and wheel came bouncing past the front of the jeep and hit the curb, bounced about 12' in the air and went way down a 50' embankment which was a lot steeper than it looked. Scary thing was it gave no warning, just broke. I probably drove the thing on 3 wheels for a hundred or so feet before the rotor slammed into the pavement...talk about rolling resistance! It was an interesting call to the wife ;-) to say the least.

Glad you're ok.

and finally, as an 'experiment', I bought a pair of Birfields on EBay via CV Unlimited...they DO have them in the correct size for this year, and they include the ABS ring....

Would like to know how the 'experiment' goes, keep us posted

Wow... glad you're okay. :)

Holy crap!
So any conclusion on how/why this happened?

Glad you are safe! i had a similar issue with my 40 with drum brakes, but it starting pulling to the right and immediately pulled over, took it apart to find the bearing was toast. Luckily all wheels were still attached. the bummer was that i was two exits from home, coming back from a long wheeling trip.

Gave me an excuse to upgrade to disk :)

why?

1> maintenance....two years of being on the road for Trail Teams and then spending all winter prepping my FJ40, two trailers and my tow rig and I failed to do maintenance on the FZJ80....too many rigs, not enuf time.,..

2> 'suspect' a bent spindle as well...steering wheel has been 'off' for months and my rig had been 'out on loan' for while...I just hadn't figgered out what the issue was (now I know)

given the current condition of the spindle, I'm gonna blame that....since I can't tell any different...lol

This is nothing more than your rig being pissed it hasn't hit the trails in a while. They'll do that to ya.
Now fix it and wheel it :D

Glad yer ok.

Buck

Wow Brian. Glad your OK and thanks for showing folks what not to do.

I think B is right, does look like your bearing had a problem, can't see what else could have caused it. Not sure what could have caused the spindle to be bent

Wow, glad no one was hurt - great piece of driving Woody! It is funny though, when I bought my truck I had the maintenance record pulled at Toyota of Dallas, and in the 25 pages or so they printed was this statement. "Vehicle was brought in with chief complaint of the front passenger tire fell off." I assume something similar happened. Also it seems my PS wheel bearings need more frequent tightening that the DS.

PS - You might want to brush that gravel off those bearings before repacking them with grease! :D

Wouldn't a bent spindle vibrate like hell? And why would that cause the brake rotor to fail that way?
