This bolt is the pinnicle of all evil reincarnate

Broke the die, then when trying to drill out the die, broke the bit...

Dude...

Weld something to it.

A bolt or socket, and it'll be out in seconds.

Unless you want to come down to cordova bay, I might just get a new diff cover...

It is literally the bolt from hell.

just pull the diff cover and take it to any shop with a nut or a socket for them to weld on if you don't have a welder... take a 6 pack to trade them. 5 min... and fixed.

Good plan, perhaps you could use a couple fine brews...

He might be just a smidge too far away...

In a pinch, you can fill the diff through the breather on the axle tube, or even through a bolt on the diff cover if you pull one of the studs.

I had the same issue years ago on a full floater, which meant no removeable cover. I used the breather hole quite a few times...

At least you could drive it to someone with a welder then. Save you having to pull the cover off.

Pulling the cover and having it dealt with is a good idea.
So is taking it to Dan's for some help.

I would first go buy a propane hand held torch, get a yellow bottle of gas rather than propane as it burns hotter. Head home and heat that sucker up as hot as you can get it with the torch. Get vice grips on it and it will come out easy peezy. The torch will come in handy for everything from brake lines to wheel nuts. Very handy tool for rusty Cruisers.

after 120,000 km on that diff oil she is about due for a changeout whether she needs it or not :hillbilly:

I shot Dan a PM, haven't heard back from him yet...

As for the vise grip idea, the whole bolt is rounded off from my previous endevor with vise grips, might give it another shot though!

Got the bolt off!

Torched it, flooded with penetrant, and went to town on it with vise grips

As for the mysterious vibration at speed, I'm beginning to think its my pinion bearing on the rear axle.
Going to see if there is any movement tomorrow

Put T/C in neutral and try and move the flange at the pinion and the T/C if there is play at T/C, I recommend rebuild and same at diff. Also look for play in Ujoint

Filled up the transfer case and rear diff, checked the pinion bearing on the diff and the bearing on the transfer case as well and no shake or rattle was heard
Took her for a spin and once I got it on the highway at around 80-90 the vibration was heard again... Im beginning to think that I might have flat spots on my tires...
Any other speed there really isnt any other sound...
Got a fancy "New" diff cover in the process though!

Next Up my mangled lower rockers have been trimmed right off!
When the $$$ starts rolling in the plan is to have a big piece of square steel in that area welded to the frame

A bit of fiberglass work on the rear passenger side fender, still more to be done closer to the bumper

The spare tire carrier has been excommunicated from this project, hopefully never to be seen again

The rusted out C channel... Now that is a whole other story, most of you suggested busting out the rivets and chiseling out the channel and as good as it sounds, I have no idea where to start, the whole thing is a rusted out clusterfxxx and the best plan I've got now is to take a piece of steel and weld a reienforcing bracket between the shackle mount and the frame in the C channel
This is just a quick idea of how it could go down...

Big Update!
Just got back from working up in the Queen Charlotte Islands this summer. Lots of work, Lots of fish, and Lots of money!

I pull into the driveway and I see the old rusty heap of my fj60, and I decide to go out and get... THIS!
G98USSy.jpg

Its a 87' HJ60 (no turbo :( ) she runs like a top, has a intact interior, signaficantly less rust than the other one, the frame is so much better and this one has... 630,000km... all the springs are sagged out, and my front right side springs are almost all snapped...

All the more excuse to get that lift kit thats been well worn into my mind!

only problem is that I could really use some help putting it in... If anyone would like to come over to help out in exchange for some  and some Pizza, in exchange for some :wrench: it would be much appreciated!

It feels great to be back in victoria and ill be seeing you all at the next meetup!
