factory soft tops never had that lip even in the late 70s and early 80s. The soft amby doors don't use a lip like the hard amby doors do.

Man I never noticed that- but my late 84 FST doesn't have the lip either.
I met Fabien's Dad recently here at a 40 meeting here on Japan. Nice guy as far as I could tell. He's working on a 300 page book on land cruisers that will be in 3 languages. Sounds like it will be the most exhaustive literary effort on the 40 series ever written.
