Rig Specs:
85 runner- 4cyc./ 4wd/ 5 speed

Basically pulled trans out today to install a new clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing & throw out in.....

Question I have is I was gonna resurface the flywheel while there..... when removed it had a slight edge near the outside of the pattern.

Napa says it a step grind & they cannot do it..... so I had a buddy drop it at a speed shop that says they can do it.

Has anyone ran into this before?

Didn't know a toyota would have a step on their flywheels....

Yup, and it's important that they pull the pins out of the face and machine that the same as they machine the clutch surface... For proper clutch force etc.... All mini-trucks/4Runners are like that, at least up till 95.

So I have a related question. What would happen if the flywheel was not machined correctly?

I have about 35k on my current clutch. I'm getting all kids of stuttering and chattering when I engage / disengage my clutch from a stop. I'm pretty sure it's the clutch and I've got a kit on order and am planning on replacing it this weekend. If my flywheel was not machined correctly the last time, can I have it remachined this time or is it junk?

Weather it can be machined again depends on how thin it is now, and the condition of the faces... Most shops won't machine a flywheel with heat cracks etc...

If only the clutch face was machined before then you would have diminished clamping force on the clutch disk, I don't think that could cause chattering by it's self... Does it chatter in 1st and reverse?

Not that it matters at this point ... but Land Cruisers also have a stepped clutch. The machine shop I took my 2F flywheel to made an issue of the step and those pins.
