Hello All,

Just finished installing the Whole Hog bracket, 8" Pioneer shallow mount sub and VM Audio 1channel amp. I am not able to compare before and after as the stock speakers were trashed when I bought the truck (96 FZJ80) last October. I also replaced the speakers in the front doors with a set of Pioneer shallow mount speakers. Have not yet gotten around to replacing the stock back door speakers as they are still functional, and I have them turned down low. Keeping the truck as close to stock as possible is a very high priority...

My preference in music is jazz and instrumental rock. The purpose of installing the sub was to be able to hear the notes from the bass definitively. I wanted to be able to hear the notes the bass player plucks, not just a rhythmic thump psychotically blended with the drums. The system I installed has accomplished this admirably. The effect is subtle in that I can actually tell what is being played, but it is by no means a quantum leap to sonic ecstasy. I am OK with my sub setup, but the midrange and highs from the door speakers sound "Squonky". I will probably install a set of the Pyle Audio speakers (discussed elsewhere) in the doors when "squonky" is no longer tolerable and I feel the need to experiment further.

The other day I saw reference to a MUD thread that discussed adding a home-built fiberglass enclosure to the back of the Whole Hog bracket. Was unable to track the thread down as Me and Search have a Love/Hate relationship...

Unfortunately Mr. T did not design the 80 for high fidelity. I fear that to reach such a state of excellence would not only be costly, but would alter the otherwise sublime "OEM-ness" of my ride well beyond what I am willing to undertake at present. Any input from those who have significantly upgraded the sound of their trucks while retaining the stock configuration of same would be much appreciated.

I've been running Rockford Fosgate 6.5" components (R165-S) in the front with the tweeters mounted on the A-pillars and 6.5" 2 ways (T165-S) in the rear. Kenwood head unit and amp.

What did you do for a head unit? I think you're going to need a multichannel amp to get the desired sound out of your door speakers.

I will look at the Rockford Fosgate offerings. What did you have to do to the rear doors to get the larger speakers to fit? I have looked for a set that have the same weird 3-hole bolt pattern as the factory mount to avoid cutting metal or drilling new holes. I came across a set of 4" Bose speakers with the 3-hole pattern, but they were the wrong impedance (1 ohm vs the stock 4 ohm). I think they were out of a Buick...

The head unit is a Sony, which came with the truck. My plan is to install a 4 channel amp in addition to the sub amp, or maybe go to a 5 channel amp, when I get around to replacing the head unit.

Another idea I have toyed with in the darker mental recesses is to (precisely) cut the plastic panel over the rear wheel well and install a 12" sub cabinet that extends both into the interior of the truck and into the concealed space. This of course opens up a non-OEM can of worms
(and eliminates the oh-so-useful storage cubby).

Went to the Rockford Fosgate website. Could not find the product numbers txgringo quotes. Found some shallow mount 6.5" speakers but they are listed as "discontinued". Oh well...

Another note on the Whole Hog bracket: It fit the truck, amp and speaker perfectly and easily. It came with nuts and bolts ready to mount. I did substitute a couple of hex bolts for the cap screws that came with the unit so it would be easier to wrench close to the floor of the truck.
The only other hardware needed was screws, nuts and bolts to attach the amp and speaker to the bracket. The bracket is a bit pricey but it works well and is specific to the 80. Best of all the install was hassle-free thanks to the bracket. Totally worth it so far.

Ordered my whole hog today. Also picked up a Sony MEX unit that drives 100w X 4 channels so hoping that will keep me from having to install an additional amp for the front and rear doors. I also prefer a clean install as factory looking as possible.

A lot of stuff today is plug and play. i have an alpine UTE-73BT deck. And alpine compact amp. They are about the size of a ice cream sandwich . And then they have compact subwoofers too. Most companies have compact stuff though. But I like alpine. I don’t have a compact amp. However I put a volleyball size portable player in my rig while I was working on it and it had big bass in the small “room” that the 80 has. It only has like a 4” woofer in the back. It has a little port on it That’s why it’s loud. I am not sure which compact players are ported but it could be possible that they all are because more air flow means louder bass. But less tight. Without opening up a can of worms I’ll just stop there. I think you could fit a compact sub in there. What you could do is rip out those side panels where he sub is and make storage. But then it might be obvious that speakers are hidden in there. And I don’t like spending 800$ on speakers every 4 months after thy get stolen either. I’d rather spend it on gas, or winch ropes. Or what ever. Let me tell you though I’m on here and I love my land cruiser so much. But I removed the rear seats all four of them. And I put 2 15” subwoofers which take up all the space of the two middle seats. Car manufacturers only sell cars because they are made for everybody. Other wise they wouldn’t stay in business. So I customized my rig. And it’s 3999 lbs. because I want to put a roll cage inside the car. And harness bars harness 4 point seat belts. I really only have room for two seats. i feel like I had to post one response here basically because only until you put two 15”s plus a potted box in your rig is when your music comes alive. Because your 5-1/4” or 6-1/2” speakers actually will then basically...turn into 6-1/2” tweeters. Mega mega mega tweeters. If you need any help with ohms and matching subs. Don’t stress out to much. Because sonic electronix, and maybe crutchfield are the cheapest places to buy, plus hey have a match feature like a drop down bar with ever brand and size. And then they will show you the best match for which ever sub and amp you are trying to match. And I say don’t stress out because even though some amps are 600 Watts or 1000 Watts all you really need is like 500 Watts for two subs because there is a term called parallel wiring and it is available for amps today. (Stop reading if you have a headache) .Or just get 1000 Watts but make sure about one thing. That the speakers are not only two ohms. At 1000 I don’t think there is a way to bring the load down to match subs at 1000. Thank the lord Jesus Christ.

I purchased one about four years ago. I've been happy with it up until this weekend when the upper front mounting point snapped at the bend. I'm not complaining and I still think it was a good product while it lasted, just thought it should be known that it's a possibility.

Anybody looking to buy one of these mounts, I have the bracket & pioneer subwoofer that came with it. For sale for $150 + shipping (what I paid)
