So my daily driven 1988 FJ62 has developed a leak at what appears to be the water pump bearing. Hard to tell even with a mirror and a flashlight. The weep hole at the four o'clock position is dry, but there may another weep hole on top? When I remove everything to replace the water pump, I will have free access to the timing chain cover. My thought is while I'm in there and have access, I would replace the oil seal and the cover gasket. However, most forum posts I read state don't mess with it, don't breathe on it, stay away! Thoughts? Seems like a good time to replace the timing chain cover gasket and oil seal?

Is the timing cover leaking?....tough call if not.

I went through this same dilemma, and I had the ENTIRE front of my 62 off (covid project), replaced the power steering line and was doing a bunch of other work. My front seal/timing cover definitely leaks, but it wasn't in the scope of my project at the time. I was nervous about the crank pulley nut, and lots of posts about what a finicky job it is, etc...I chickened out. :bang: I kick myself now for not doing it then.
If/when I have to do a water pump again, I'll make a bigger job of it and do the front seal. :(

Thank you Sir!
I will gather the parts needed!

Word of advice: The timing gear (not chain) cover has I think 4-5 different types of screws & bolts. They all have to go in exactly in the same order or it will leak. The FSM has a diagram, and it's on the parts diagram as well. IF you plan on taking the timing plate off too - the piece that screws to the engine block, and lives behind the timing cover, you may have three big flathead screws. Toyota sells a torx-bit screw for that. Much less liable to strip. You'd have to remove the cam gear to get that timing plate off though (which usually means taking the entire cam out and taking it to somebody with a big press) so you're probably going to leave well enough alone on that one.

FWIW I sell repops of the timing gear oil squirter. If you get in that far and the squirter is messed up give me a shout. These are made out of solid brass rod and are nearly identical to the originals.

Thank you!
I remember that beautiful bit of kit you turned. I will probably get one or two now before you run out.

Update:
As of now I'm having a staring contest with the timing cover. It's definitely leaking, see photo below. While I wait on parts, I'm going to start cleaning. Yech!

I replaced the timing cover gasket while doing my water pump. It was a bit of a pain, but if I can do it then anyone can…. I didn’t mess with the secondary gasket behind the cover.
