Update fuel tank gasket.
On a regular check after nearly 2,000 kms of driving her around, I found a small drip trace at the ear end of the fuel tank that I couldn’t quite get my head around as it didn’t smell like petrol and felt oily. She had been smelling like petrol though and since there are no oily fluids back there, it just had to relate to the tank. The spacing between tank and car bottom is very small so it was see anything, but I did find some paint that had wrinkled. The tank had to come out again …
The fuel pump cover plate had been sealed to the tank with the supplied cork gasket using Permatex Aviation glue (still have nightmares thinking about that job). It appeared fuel has been reacting with the glue, or putting pressure on it, as there was evidence of bubble formation along gasket. Small amounts of fuel/glue had weeped out and affected some paint. I have either used too much glue, or messed around for too long trying to get the plate installed, or the surface simply wasn’t flat enough. Either way, leak and smell explained.
I decided to get rid of the cork and glue and made a new gasket out of a 1.6mm Viton A rubber sheet and installed it dry. 94 Octane fuel with ethanol is well priced over here and I wanted peace of mind. Here are some photos of the new install.
Other than that, and a leaky 38yo oil pressure sensor that will need to get replaced, she drives like a charm
