Sounds good!!! Thanks
After looking a your pics I think I have a few things mixed around! It's still running however and I'm getting the gas tank recall done tomorrow.

Well I took the rig in about 25 miles away to get the gas tank recall done last night. It cruised along nicely and then about 5 miles out it just kind of didn't want to get up to speed in 4th gear and then eventually the same in 3rd. I pulled over and the rear brakes were smoking pretty good. I initially thought it was the transmission but could the brakes have been locking up keeping it from moving along at decent speed? Also, then the brake pedal went almost to the floor again. 2nd gear seemed ok. I did bleed the brakes last weekend before I took it in and all seemed good. Thanks for the help!!!

The brakes were dragging. Time to overhaul the brake system.

@OSS thanks for the response. I will start digging into them. It did get a new master cylinder back in 2001!!!

On a good note the new gas tank is in! Thanks for all the help guys.

Picked up the cruiser tonight and drove it home but it did the same thing about 15 miles down the road. Rig didn’t want to pick up speed in 4th and then eventually 3rd. Seems like front brakes aren’t decompressing after a while of driving. The pedal became very hard to push in. Rotors got extremely hot. The dealership said I need new calipers. Any thoughts.

To add on to my last post the rig feels like I need to shift into 4th gear at around 25mph. That seems a bit early and maybe because there is so much drag on the brakes.

Yes, it sounds like your calipers are not releasing. I can imagine how that would relate to upshifting to 4th at 25mph. Is your clutch slipping?
I don't shift to 4th under 35.

@MoaByte, thanks for the reply! Yeah, it seemed that was a bit early to have to shift into 4th. Should I just replace the calipers all together or get in there and clean them up with brake cleaner since the rig sat for so long? The clutch seems ok other than there was a giant rat or mouse nest up in it.

Sounds good!! Thanks for the help!

Can anyone tell me what this is and what it does. On the drivers side by fender. Looks like a mouse chewed off the wires on top. Thanks!

Drained both front and rear differentials. Worse than what I expected! I'm just leaving the drain plugs open for a few days and hoping the majority of that sludge comes out.

2mbb, thanks for the info!! I found a replacement and got it put in!

Been having fun fixing up the old girl but have another question for you knowledgeable folks. I took the rig in to have some rust repaired(the guy did a great job!) and I noticed the clutch pedal was getting soft. When I picked it up it was so soft it wouldn't shift into gear. I was able to pump it enough and limp it into the local Toyota shop. I did pop the clutch cap off and noticed there were bubbles when I pressed down on the clutch pedal. It doesn't seem to be losing any fluid. Is this something that maybe needs to just be bled or is the slave or master shot? Of course the Toyota dealership told me the clutch itself needs to be replaced which I can't afford and honestly don't think its bad as it has always shifted just fine. FYI the rig sat for about 10 years before I got it. I did add the transmission to transfer case bypass hose. That shouldn't have any affect on this correct?

Thanks for any help/advice!!!

It sounds like you have a place where air is entering the system. Maybe a pinhole that isn’t quite leaking yet but allows air to build up. Replacing the master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder are very easy. They’re not expensive either. I would also replace the line between the two. It’s a couple of bolts and then you bleed the system the same as you do with the brakes. If that doesn’t fix the issue then Toyota may be correct about needing a new clutch. The clutch works until one day it doesn’t, generally.

cps432, thanks so much for the info!!! Hoping that bleeding it will give me enough pedal to get it back home about 30 miles so I can do the work myself.

The best solution is to replace both the master and slave cylinder. When I did mine many years ago, I also replaced the hard tube. Back then it was available from Toyota. I'm not sure if it is still available today. You can probably bend one yourself fairly easily. I remember it being challenging to get to the mounting clips that were behind the engine along the firewall.

you can try bleeding your old system. When you checked for leaks, did you pull back the rubber boots at either end (pedal end of the master and pushrod end of the slave)? Sometimes the fluid will collect inside the boot and it doesn't look like it's leaking. a leak at the master will run down your firewall behind the carpet.

☝️This is good advise. Check the pedal to see if there’s any fluid migrating into the cabin. That’s usually where leaks form and it usually runs down to the brake and clutch pedals.
