So I am finally getting around to getting the 84 I recently picked up ready to drive. As suggested by others on here I put a little ATF in the cylinders as the rig has been sitting for many years. I'm scheduled to get a new gas tank for it in a month(recall!!!). Buddy and I noticed the belts don't want to budge. He mentioned we should take a look at the harmonic balancer. It looks like a challenge to get on it unless I am looking at it wrong. Is there an easy way to see if the engine will turn freely or to see if it is seized up?? The guy I got if from said it ran about 2-3 years ago but has been sitting since. I just don't want to do anything stupid and jack up the engine!! Thanks for the help.
 
You can get a 46mm socket… I think it’s 46.. and a breaker bar and turn the crank over that way. You don’t need to remove the HB for this. Maybe pulling the belts would help. You can pull the spark plugs to help get it turning again.
 
Just crank over the starter with a fully charged battery. It won’t start up right away probably but the engine should at least turn over. If not then you’re going to have to dig deeper as to why.
 
When I adjust my valves I remove the spark plugs and can rotate the engine by using the nut on the alternator. Turn it clockwise. If the belt is tight it turns over pretty easily. (your experience may vary). This is probably the easiest way to see if your engine will turn over by hand. Next easiest would be to use the fly wheel tool (remove the inspection cover plate) or the crank nut (if you have a 46mm socket and have clearance to get it on with everything installed). OSS' method does sound easy, but I get concerned that something might break (rings?) that you could avoid by rotating first by hand.

Always pull the plugs and put some atf or oil or penetrating product and let it soak overnight is best and should turn over with starter to get the cylinder walls lubed and hopefully oil pressure up.. then put plugs back in and see if it fires. If tank is bad run a line from fuel filter into a can of new gas to get it running til you can clean or replace the tank
 
Perfect!!! Thanks for the advice. The local toyota has been great to work with on a 30 year old recall!! Getting a new tank it in should help matters I would think.
 
I gave the alternator nut a turn clockwise last night and the wheel turned but the belt didn't move...

I've heard of folks putting it in 3rd gear and pulling it around with a tractor in a pinch. If that doesn't work it's done.

i have done the above before with great results but soak cylinders with atf or similar to help free the rings for a week or so if starter won’t work and you try the bump method above. My 2c! Good luck
 
Pull plugs squirt in a generous amount of Marvel’s Mystery Oil (you can find it at any auto parts store). Let it soak a few days. Then bump with plugs out and a good battery.

If it works run it! These tractor engines lend themselves well to neglect and then restart after a long hibernation
 
Haha ok!!! I put a new battery in it and it already is struggling to hold a charge!
 
Probably a drain somewhere… keep it on a trickle charger and once running look or the draw by removing 1 fuse at a time to see the circuit that’s draining it
