FJ60 Fuel Tank Capacity

Biggest fill up i had on my old 60 without starving the fuel pump/killin it was 23.02 gallons.

Really? I always thought that the stock tank was like in the 16gallon range? Did they possibly change with the recall tanks? @beno ???

Best thing to do is find a comfortable cruising range. For me, I fill up regardless of what my fuel gauge says when my odometer gets to around 400-420 miles. That way I know I am staying close to a 20 gallon fill up every time.

Dude, RTFM. The fuel tank capacity is literally in the owner's manual. There was no recall that change tanks. The rear tank size in all FJ60s was always 23.8 gallons.

If 60/62's only held 16 gallons, most would just get to travel from gas station to gas station, never going off road...

maybe i can ask on this thread a question then. sorry if its a hijack. i have an fj62 with a diesel swap and therefore have a bj60 tank swapped in to deal with the sending unit difference. i am finding that my truck starts to starve at 1/4 tank (by my gauge). every time i fill I'm putting in 60ish laters (15.7 gallons). would this likely be a fuel pick up problem in my tank as opposed to a 16 gallon tank and wrong reading from the sending unit

It's more likely a venting issue. Also remember that diesel foams up, so you may have to wait for the foam to settle before topping the tank off. I've had that issue at truck stops where it fills my tank so fast that the nozzle clicks before the tank is actually full due to foaming.

It could also be a fuel pickup problem, but it could also be a sending unit problem. You should drop your tank to check the pickup inside.

I've run without a fuel cap to try to see if its a venting issue (vacuum in the tank) and made no difference. could it possibly be a return line too high in the tank causing it to splash as it returns causing it to foam up? i though about this but couldn't imagine that there would be enough fuel returning to cause this. i think i need to drop the tank but thats such a pain. trying to find ways to avoid this but i don't know if thats possible. my sending unit reads full right after toping up and doesn't change after letting it sit for a short time so i dont think its a foaming issue on refuelling,.

Just drop the tank. It's two bolts and disconnecting a few lines. Piece of cake in the grand scheme of things.

But first you have to lower the spare tire and get it out of the way, then remove four nuts and drop the spare tire support crossmember before you can remove the two bolts on the tank straps and pivot them down with the tank.

Very true, forgot about that! It's been a very long time since I've had a spare tire in the stock location.

...+2 year Necro-Post.

I have the same issue, albeit with a 350 V8 swap in a FJ60.
Tank fills to 16g +/-, every time, and reads 'full' on the gauges... but drops to 'empty' after 16 g has been burned.

...where's the other space in my tank?! haha.

I'd like to know if Franklin ever solved this hijack/sidestory issue... and if dropping the tank yielded any interesting finds.

This might be caused by mixing up the feed and return fuel lines when the engine was hooked up.

Your sender or the float on the sender might be messed up.
Or the gauge in the dash, but those seem to last forever. I would order a new sender just to have it on hand, drop the tank to investigate, and install the new sender while you have it out. I need to do this as well as the fuel level on the gauge in mine doesn’t seem to drop consistently.

EDIT: sorry, I was thinking pump. You can access the sender from inside the cargo area.
