FJ60 brake drums – OEM vs aftermarket/sources?

@OSS Hope you know the only reason you weren’t called was you had not posted in this thread, your advice is always sound.

I agree. BOCO.

There are no aftermarket drums currently available in USA the quality of the OE drums.

Mountain Brand/ Ikuta was or is the OEM, but no longer available. Find a local dealer who will match internet price and save the shipping, while they are still available.

I am going to be the contrarian here, and I have become a OEM-only convert since I started my shop, but we use aftermarket drums in the shop all the time without issues, I don’t think the OEM drums are worth it. My thoughts are that the adjuster/shoe hardware all being in good shape and correct OEM is what is really important to everything working well.

@cruisermatt …aftermarket drums…which particular brand would you recommend/trust?

Several months back I lost my brakes in Moab on Elephant Hill. Finally got it to stop…but it was the scariest event in my many years of wheeling. I have now addressed everything in my braking system except for my drums, including some parts from @cruisermatt

Leaning towards OEM even tho it’s a MAJOR price difference with aftermarket vs OEM. I have one dealer within 3 hours of my home. Just called him…$200 each, but at least no shipping charges.

😲. $200 EACH now. Damn.

Yes, this dealer is a total rip off. On other parts I can’t even get them to match the often lower prices of Camelback Toyota in Phoenix.

I found the drums at other Cruiser places for $193 each…then shipping is aprox $75. So $200 & no shipping is what I will have to live with if I do go OEM. Right now I’m leaning that way.

Thanks everyone, just ordered 2 OEM drums. Will be here 8/19…$200 each.😝

Appreciate your input.👍

1986 stock fj60 rear drums.

I know this thread is 10 years old but several knowledgeable folks have responded & are still around, so I’m looking for some thoughts. Any recommendations for solid rear drums for my 60 that I wheel a lot…front/rear lockers etc.

I usually go OEM and may still do so with the drums…BUT OEM’s are pushing $200 each vs aftermarket @ $40-75 each. Please give me your thoughts.

Thanks

Late to reply but I’m still using the Napa drums. Guess I need to pick up some OEM while they’re available.

Yes Sir, and that’s another reason I went OEM.👍

Fwiw, we stock and I personally prefer the OEM drums (our part# BRD60020) but we have an aftermarket India made drum that we’ve sold for a decade or more with zero issues and they are in the $70 range as I recall. Our part# is BRD60020AFT and they fit 8/80-90 4x/6x/7x semi & full-float.

You’ll pay shipping, but no tax :D

I placed an order yesterday for OEM drums and a shoe kit for my 79 J40 through the Toyota of Decatur 25% off, free shipping sale for 190 bucks 😃

Have you received your Drums?

Just asking because my experience with Toy of Decatur is when they sell stuff too cheap, you never get it and have to ask for a cancel/refund, which they quickly do.

Yes, I received my order before the sale was even over.

Ok, I’ve procrastinated long enough…this post will put this job front & center.🍺🍺. I’ve had the new OEM drums for about 6 months now, about to tackle this job.😎😁

I’ll be doing my rear brake overhaul in the next week or so as well. Looking forward to hearing your results John! I’ll post up my results. Ended up with OEM drums as I waited for one of those sales from Toyota and scored a set 20% off.

Will do @DrRock And this is exactly why I posted this ‘update’. This will encourage me to actually get this job done. I’ve still got a lot going on during the next 30-45 days tho. But sooner rather than later👍

In October of last year while doing Elephant Hill in Moab my rear brakes failed & I thought I was actually going to die. I got her stopped & it wasn’t ‘that’ bad…but at that instant I didn’t know it…so I thought I was gonna die.

Since then I’ve replaced the rear shoes and wheel cylinders on both sides. All that’s left now are these new drums. I’ve had this 60 almost 25 years & it’s now pushing 400k. What’s on there is probably not the original drums but they are at least 25 years old.

I’m hoping this last step will get me back to where they feel really good. Again, stand by, I will report back when finished.

Awesome, sounds good John, I've completely refreshed my braking system and purchased all new springs from @cruisermatt so like you I'm looking forward to having a fresh setup. I found that once this braking system is in factory tune, it's more than adequate to stop this truck even when loaded.

Looking forward to seeing you at SAS.

Cheers, James

Ok @DrRock I finally got off my butt & installed 2 new OEM brake drums on my 60. Crazy expensive @ $200 each. Seems we are either crying because the parts are too expensive or that what you need is no longer available.

Now since my near death experience last year in Moab, I’ve replaced everything on my rear brakes, springs, shoes, drums, wheel cylinders & even one backing plate. When it comes to brakes at least, as @OGBeno always says…’buy once cry once’.
