I am trying to get some information on the difference between a non locking an locking steering wheel, beyond that one locks and the other doesn't.:steer:

My steering is non locking, but might want to make it locking, any thoughts?

Is there a button on top of the column you press before rotating the key, I notice on the newer columns there is a hole?

Any help, pic would be great.

I know the ignition key housing would have to be different, what other parts are needed?

Here is the steering column I am redoing

I didn't think any 40's came with a locking wheel. The 60's had them.

Not in the US but other market got them in the eighties. I have a column fro a RHD HJ47 that has it. Figuring if I can use it in a LHD. Now that I think about it could be even earlier. The clam shell cover have the flat shot where the push buttom is. Hoods with a cable lock from a handle inside were also offered in other markets.

The small metal cover in your picture is where the block is that drops in a slot when the key is turned to off and is lifted up when the key is rotated to on. When it is down in the slot it locks the steering from turning. In my 1975 FJ40 it would drop in while the key was on so I removed it.
Thanks for the info!

That is what I was thinking, most likely an overseas requirement

My -68 has steering lock

I would like to see a picture of your steering column. Not sure how they would do on a 73 model. Before the 73 model the ignition switch was on the dash and not sure how it could lock the column. But it could have happen prior to the eighties in other markets. US made automobiles had then well before then. Just interested how it would be done with ignition switch on the dash in a FJ40?

My '77 has one like this: The Club Pedal-to-Wheel Lock Vehicle Anti-Theft Device, Red - Walmart.com

The ignition switch is mounted on the column, i will take some pics for you tomorrow it is late night here in Sweden

Unless Toyota changed it five years earlier in Europe yours probably been changed. The 73 model was the first year of a separate steering column that wasn't part of the steering box. 73 had rag joint by the box and the opening in the firewall was completely different. Would like to see pictures of your steering box as well as the opening in the firewall.

And here's what's left of one my local car thieves attacked on a BJ42 that was parked in the central city (and which we managed to recover some weeks later):

I remember the thread on the country wide search to find it. Glad it had a happy ending.

I guess Toyota figured we only have honest people here in the US and a locking steering column wasn't needed.

I went a simpler route... 5/8" Kryptonite cable lock around a 2" downtube of the roll bar.

I've never seen anything like it. It does appear to have TEQ on which makes me think it was a part Toyota came up with for a requirement of a certain market. The steering box and column would be stock for that year. I'm guessing it was also a floor shift transmission from the factory. I doubt the clamp would clear the column shift rod that ran down the top of the steering column. Do you have to turn the wheel a certain way to turn the key far enough to remove? Only way I could see that working is the steering shaft having a flat spot a claw fits over to lock the column. Only down I see is remove the bolt(s) for the clamp and pull it away and the column would be unlocked. But not any worst than the later double sided keys that almost any key that fits in the lock will turn it after it's worn. One of these things to deter honest people. Does it have a double sided key? Does the key match the doors.

Yes it is a double sided key and it wont fit the doors. I removed it a couple of years but i am not really sure about how it locked, i seem to remember it was a rectangular piece pushing against the Rod. I will remove it again and take a pic to ease your curiosity
Here is a pic of my 67 with the lock furher down the rod
