What would be the symptoms of a fuel pump needing to be rebuilt? I’m about to replace my fuel lines and do aftermarket connections to the fuel pump (1/8 BSPT to barb since I can’t find flared ends). I was thinking I should rebuild it while I’m doing everything else, but should I?? Does preventative maintenance make sense on these?

Hesitation or failing under load in early stages might notice it first going up a grade engine will appear to stumble as the pump isn’t providing enough fuel to the system.

When the diaphragm gets worse it will make starting hard as the system doesn’t keep fuel above and needs to prime or struggles to prime even.

If you are refreshing everything it would give you a known starting point. Depending on how you use the vehicle it could save you from dealing with it on a trip or where parts are tougher to get. This is coming from someone who changed a fuel pump in a parking lot on a road trip. So my view might be on the more conservative side.

We do have a Holiday Sale running now through 12/2. 10% off your order and if you are spending over $125 you get a free hat.

Got it, thanks. Yeah…may as well do it anyway it sounds like. At least that way I can eliminate from any issues down the road. I appreciate the info. I emailed you earlier this week to determine which one I needed. I’ll get one ordered in the next few days.

I’ve been thinking I had a carb issue, bc my ‘64 FJ40 started stalling when stopping, but it has also recently started smelling like gas in my garage and it never did that before….the timing of the small and stalling seem to align. Upon further inspection I believe the fuel pump might have a very slow leak. The gasket looks wet. Could that cause the stalling when stopping?

I ordered the kit yesterday anyway, but trying to see if it could be anything else. No gas leaks anywhere else that I can determine.

If the pump is leaking internally through the diaphragm, fuel could be diluting your engine oil. Drain a bit and see what the oil looks/smells like.

I checked the oil and it didn’t seem to smell like gas. Once I rebuild the fuel pump I’ll probably change the oil anyway just to make sure.
