I have been searching for an early bumper for awhile and finally came across one! First thing I did was to strip off all the layers of paint to see if I could find the correct color. We were pretty sure the bumpers were silver and not painted the body color.

1950s to 1962 and maybe some of the early '63s. I don't believe '64 used the early style bumpers. The new style front bumpers were the same from '64 to '83 with more holes added as the years went by.

The two holes on the left, in the first picture, are not factory. The PO had a tow bar attached.

I started with paint stripper and scraped off all the black as soon as it was tacky. I followed that with a red 3M Scotch-Brite pad and reducer, soap and water, then buffed it with a few levels of buffing compound.

Ignore the black on the inside. I didn't strip the black but verified the silver is on the inside as well.

You can also see the orange primer Toyota used under the silver. My '64 has the same color primer under the body color.

Here is the difference between the early bumpers and later bumpers. You can also see the silver is a little different.

It looks like July of '63 (or shortly before publishing) the bumper may be the new style based on this one picture. Rounded doors for the FST and the later bumper.

Were the rear bumpers silver too?

Pete

Mine is a December 1964 model and has the older Bumper with Crank Handle Bracket on it.

Very interesting. I thought the early bumpers ended early-1962. In fact, I think every 1962 that I've seen came from the factory with the later bumpers.

That is not the old style bumper. Hand Crank was used for many years after the bumper change.

No the bumperettes were body color until 65? I have a 1960 FJ25 with original paint and some beige bumperettes from the early sixties.

I agree I have never seen a early bumper on a FJ40 past 61 production date. Besides the bumper the mounting system changed. The riveted gussets on the side of the frame were added with the new bumper. The bottom mounting plate was gone and the top plate was longer making the cruiser slightly longer.

25 (the early bumper discussed) are different at the ends too. way to tell at a glance. i have a new silver 45 bumper in the family heirlooms (woulda been pulled new to fit a roobar). interested now when it dates from. possibly 65; they bought a new 45 then. will find my camera one these days.

here that newish bumper i mentioned. can anyone roughly date this? has lots of holes;may be newer than i thought (maybe even early 80s hj47)?

Hello, I just purchased a 1960 FJ25L Vin# 0-FJ25-20964 the front bumper is Red as the body, It seems like the non-US versions are little different, is that correct? the L letter after the FJ25 stands for something?
Thanks a lot

The L stands for Left hand drive.
