try the "Moab 4x4 Outpost" shop at the south end of town (left turn off the main drag) - last time I was there, they had all kinds of spares, and a guy working there who has a 40 himself

I could not find one in town.

After I took a beer break I thought about it. I made it 3 wheel drive for the rest of the trip.

I took the inner ball race / cage off the end of the shaft.

Then I sacrificed several pair of mechanics gloves to fill the space around the axle shaft. Then shoved 3 gloves folded in half to take up the space between the shaft and the spindle. I just finished fins and things without a problem. With it being locked in the front and rear I have 3 wheel drive!

dang on the Saturday closure :bang:

way to improvise

I carry fully pre-assembled/moly'ed birf/axle shaft assemblies as spares - have been ridiculed for years, until they came in handy:

I'm thinking of upgrading to longfeilds. But which ones?

27 spline birfs for 250 or

30 spline birfs and axles for 600

My wallet wants me to use the birfs I already have out of my donor 60.

What to do???

Carrying a spare birf is good, a pair of axles,,, OK.

This is a bit overkill, so, yep, you caught grief!:hillbilly:

Everything about 30 spline Longfields is good. Do that. You'll also need to change the knuckles, hubs, lockouts and disc brakes. It is a good upgrade, because the 76-78 front end is an orphan, and later stuff gets you the bigger knuckle pattern, the better steering arms, and the shorter and stronger birfields.

I carry preloaded inners + birfs. Makes for a much easier swap, but I've not broken a Longfield.
