first gen 4runner dash question

My guess on why the shifter is so sticky is that the clutch isn't engaging all the way. Is it really putting up a fight to go into gear?

If the clutch is seeming soft also check the pedal adjustment. It's under the dash, I had the lock nut come loose on mine one time causing a soft clutch pedal.

No tension on the pedal when you press it in? Just kinda soft and takes a while to come back up?

Check the clutch master cylinder on the firewall by the brake master cylinder. See if it's a little low on fluid.

Let us know what you find. It may be that simple but chances are if your fluid is really low, you may have a leak somewhere.
